Tirusulam (Tamil: திரிசூலம்) is a suburb of Chennai, India. For administrative purposes, it is a census town in Kancheepuram district. The Chennai International Airport terminals are located here. There is also a railway station here (opposite the airport) with a convenient pedestrian subway that connects the station and the airport.

History

The township of Tirusulam has its origin in the Tiruppurasundari Tirusoolanathar temple which is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century AD by Kulothunga I. The walls of the temple are inscribed with inscriptions from the Chola period.

The Tirusulam Hills have been used as a shooting spot for various Tamil movies and television soaps.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1], Tirusulam had a population of 5997. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tirusulam has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 51%. In Tirusulam, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
