Trikaripur (Malayalam: തൃക്കരിപ്പൂര്‍)is a Special Grade Panchayat situated at extreme southern part of Kasaragod District in North Malabar region of the Kerala State, India. This Panchayath consists of two villages viz. South Trikarpur and North Trikarpur[1]. While North Trikaripur village is headquartered at Main Bazar, the South Trikaripur village is at Elambachi[2].

As of 2001 India Census, Trikaripur had a population of 19357[1].

Etymology

As per local Hindu mythological belief, the name Trikarpur has been derived from "Sree Haripuram" and then "Thiru Karipuram" and later on to the present name. It is also believed that the famous "Gajendra Moksha" which is stated in "Shri Maha Bhagavatham" occurred in Trikarpur (in front of Sree Chakrapani Temple). This story is related to the "Sree Chakrapani Temple" which is believed to have been built by "Lord Parasurama" [3].

Geography

Trikaripur lies along the coast of Arabian Sea, at [4] and comprises fully cultivational midland.

While, for the people Kasaragod District Trikaripur Panchayat is the southern end of ths District, for people in rest of Kerala, Trikaripur is gateway to Kasaragod District. However, Trikarpur is a beautiful village which literally have the completeness of natural scenic beauty of the Gods own Country. This Panchayat also serves as separating border for Kasaragod District with Kannur District.

History

Trikaripur was part of Mooshika Dynasty in ancient days. During British Raj it was under Madras Presidency in Malabar District. It became part of Kerala with that state's formation on November 1, 1956 [5].

Trikaripur is very famous for its culture. Its rich and deep roots in Performance of Folk Arts like Kaliyattam (Theyyam) and Kolkali festivals make this place popular throughout the state. People from all religions of this place participate in celebrations of festivals of other religions [6][7]
