Tramelan

Tramelan is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

Geography

Tramelan has an area of 24.9 km2 (9.6 sq mi). Of this area, 58.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 32% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.1%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Tramelan has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 4,254.[1] As of 2007, 10.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (86.3%), with German being second most common ( 8.2%) and Italian being third ( 2.0%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SPS which received 32.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP (24.3%), the FDP (18%) and the Green Party (10.2%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 55.5% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 22.3%. In Tramelan about 68.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Industry

Tramelan has an unemployment rate of 1.94%. As of 2005, there were 125 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 50 businesses involved in this sector. 763 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 54 businesses in this sector. 977 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 132 businesses in this sector.[3] The historical population is given in the following table:[4]

Tramelan is also the location of the Armand Nicolet watch manufacture as well as the Tourbillon and Hairspring Manufacture Dimier.
