Titagarh (Bengali: টিটাগড়) is a city and a municipality in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.[2]

Geography

Titagarh is located at .[3] It has an average elevation of 15 metres (49 feet). It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system. Titagarh is the most densely populated city in India and ranks 3rd in the world.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[4] Titagarh had a population of 124,198. Males constitute 57% of the population and females 43%. Titagarh has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 57%. In Titagarh, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Jute Mills drew in a large labour force from the neighbouring states of Bihar and Orissa, as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh, quite often forming an overwhelming majority of the population in the area, living in shanty towns and bustees dotting the mill area. The proportion of migrants in the population was 90% in Titagarh [5]

Politics

adv.sil bhadra dutta of TMC won the Titagarh assembly seat defeating Dr.madhu samanta of CPI(M) in 2011,Pravin kumar shaw of CPI(M) defeated Ashok Shukla of Trinamool Congress in 2001 and Indian National Congress in 1996, and Ganga Prasad Saha of Congress in 1991. Ganga Prasad Saha of Congress defeated Mohammed Amin of CPI (M) in 1987 and 1982. Mohammad Amin of CPI (M) defeated Ganga Prasad Saha of Congress in 1977.[6]

Economy

Titagrh Paper Mills was set up at Titagarh and Kakinara in 1882.[7] It was acquired by Titagarh Industries in 1994.[8] Paper Mills is now called Titagarh Wagons Ltd.[9] Apart from that there are several jute and another Factories. Such as Titagarh Jute MIll No. 2, Kinnission Jute MIll, Brittania Engeeniring works, Standard Jute Mill, Empire Jute Mill, CESC generating station etc.
