Tinsukia (Assamese: তিনিচুকীয়া) is a city and a municipal board in Tinsukia district, Assam, India.
Tinsukia is a business city in the Indian state of Assam. It is situated 480 kilometres (298 mi) north east of Guwahati and 84 kilometres (52 mi) kilometres away from the border with Arunachal Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Tinsukia District of Assam, India. Hailed as the business capital of Assam, the place has a heady mix of Assamese, Bengali and Hindi-speaking people. The city is changing with the construction of numerous new malls and buildings. In ancient times Tinsukia was known as Bengmora. It was ruled by Sarbanada Singha, a Matak King. The present name of the place came from the Tinkunia Pukhuri (the pond with three sides) located at the heart of the city. Tinsukia is also a major railhead of Assam. Presently it houses the biggest railway junction of Assam. One can travel there either by train or by flight to Dibrugarh and then a taxi. Tinsukia acts as a link to many a towns of the north east of India.

The Dibru Saikhowa National Park situated adjacent to the city is one of the biggest national parks of India and is considered as one of the top Biological Hotspots of India. The mighty Brahmaputra at the northern border and the Dibru river at the southern, the park is literally an island which houses the iconic Feral horses, endangered White-winged Wood duck, the only ape in India, the Hoolock gibbon etc. among thousands of other flora and faunas. It is a bird-watcher's paradise .
The Shiv Dham is a big temple of Lord Shiva with a pond in the middle. The Tilinga Mandir (Bell temple), located at Bordubi, about 9 kilometer from Tinsukia city, is another Shiva temple where thousands of people visit every day. This temple is famous for its numerous bells(tilinga) tied at the branches of a giant peepal tree to fulfil their wishes. The Tea Estates are worth mentioning.
The region of Tinsukia experiences a wet tropical climate, and the basic seasons involved are those of summer, winter and monsoon. The best time to visit the town of Tinsukia would be during the monsoon and winter months, as the surrounding regions will be at the peak of their beauty during this time.
Summers in the city of Tinsukia are during the months of March, April and May, and these months experience a maximum temperature of around 31 °C. The minimum temperature will range around 24 °C. Rain showers are quite common during the summer months, and humidity is normally at a peak during this season.
The monsoon months in Tinsukia are the months of June, July, August and September. These months will experience heavy rainfall, and this is a good time to visit the town of Tinsukia, provided you carry proper rain gear along with you.
Winters in the city of Tinsukia are pleasant, and the maximum temperature in the region during this time will range around 24 °C. The minimum temperature during the winters will be around 11 °C. Winters in Tinsukia are during the months of October, November, December, January, and February.
Considered as the commerce capital of Assam, the district is known for its best quality tea production, wood related products like Kitply, Merino ply, National ply etc. Chamber Road, situated at the centre of the town, is the oldest area of business activities especially grocery. Even grocery items are exported from here to neighbour state Arunachal Pradesh.
Besides the above, a variety of shops are in this town dealing in garments, electronics, hardware for Tea industry, etc. The Rangagora Road and the G.N.B Road are full of Shops and Malls. Tinsukia boosts some of the finest malls and restaurants in upper assam which are a good place to hang out with friends and family. The Daily Bazaar is the oldest market. It is spread over a large area where anyone can find many things of interest, like clothes, shoes and cosmetics. The Daily Bazar has also an exclusive fish and meat market; a choice place for those who like non-vegetarian food. Many shopping malls are growing up in the city namely Vishal Mega Mart, Big Bazaar, Atrium Mall etc. The big Atrium Mall, located near the Daily Bazaar, is under construction and will be opened very soon. Another big mall named ATC Mall at G.N.B Road is recently opened is the first mall in upper Assam with all the modern features. It has a multiplex in it too. Kolkata Bazaar and many other malls are going to open very soon.
Tinsukia has one of the biggest pharmacy- Mittal Pharmacy in the whole of north-east which is located at A. T. Road near the A. S. T. C. bus stand. Vandana, the biggest multibrand clothes showroom in upper Assam is also in Tinsukia.
Tinsukia city has at least four cinema halls and a multiplex while a few multiplexes are under construction. Rangghar Cinema is the second most modern Cinema hall in Tinsukia after the opening of Fun Cinemas at ATC MALL. It is semi Multiplex with Dolby Digital Sound System and UFO Projection which gives its viewers a good watching experience. It also consists of a food court named Hasty-Tasty. The other halls are Paradise Cinema, Coronation Cinema and Renuka Cinema. These all have modern equipment. Besides these halls there are other community halls like Golapchandra Ravichandra Natya Mandir and Tinsukia Library Auditorium, where cultural programmes are staged on different occasions. The Marut Nandan Kanan with a huge man made pond and an amusement park is a good place for recreation. A heritage Railway museum is a recent addition to the city. Fun Cinemas is a new addition in the chain of Multiplex of the city.
As of 2011[update] India census,[2] Tinsukia had a population of 1,08,123. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Tinsukia has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 75%. In Tinsukia, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Tinsukia is well connected by air, national highway and railway. It is only 492 km by road from Guwahati, the Capital City of Assam. The nearest airport is at Mohanbari, Dibrugarh which is about 40 km from Tinsukia with daily connection from Delhi/Guwahati and Kolkata.
Transportation within the city is not so developed. Auto Rickshaws, Trakers, Rickshaws are used for intercity transportation. Here rickshaws is very famous among the local people. In Tinsukia the local transportation fares are high compared to other cities and towns of India.
Tinsukia is part of Dibrugarh (Lok Sabha constituency).[3]

Tinsukia has various types of communication available. Internet both wireless datacards and Broadband is available. The major mobile service providers are Airtel, IDEA, Bsnl, Aircel, Vodafone, Tata Indicom, Reliance, S Tel. Landline is also available.
