The station originally opened on 20 July 1849 by the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJAR). It was closed as a British Rail station on 24 December 1991 to permit conversion of the line for its current use. It reopened as a Metrolink station on 15 June 1992.
The canopy on the Manchester platform was demolished in August 2009. The former booking office was used as taxi office for several years up to 2003 and in Spring 2010 was converted for use as a coffee shop.
Timperley is located on the Altrincham Line with trams towards Altrincham stopping every 6 minutes during the day, Mondays to Saturdays, every 12 minutes Monday to Saturday evenings and Sunday daytime and every 15 minutes Sunday evenings. Trams also head towards Manchester and Bury, with the Monday to Saturday daytime service running every 12 minutes each to Manchester Piccadilly or Bury, while evening and Sundays journeys run to Bury via Manchester Piccadilly.[1]
Timperley station is not directly served by any bus service, although the 20 stops further down Park Road and runs to Altrincham and to Timperley Grange and Wythenshawe Hospital. The service is run by Go Goodwins during the day Mondays-Saturdays and by Arriva North West between Altrincham and Timperley Grange during evenings and on Sundays.[2]
