Early life

Timomatic was born Tim Omaji[1] in Nigeria and immigrated to Australia with his family when he was 10 months old.[2] His father was an academic and was sent to different positions around Australia.[2] Timomatic came from a musical family, with his father often playing guitar and the rest of his family displaying their passion for singing and dancing.[2] At the age of nine, Timomatic formed a band with his family and he was the percussionist for that band.[2] During the intermission of their shows, Timomatic would go on stage mimicking Michael Jackson's singing and dancing skills.[2] At the age of fifteen, he was nicknamed "Timomatic" by his friends, because of his hip-hop dancing skills, and secured a part-time position as artistic director/choreographer of dance company Kulture Break in Canberra.[2][3] In 2008, he attended music school for a year and got a Diploma in Entertainment, majoring in vocal training.[2] Timomatic explained: "I did this because I wanted to get my vocals and music up to scratch; that was me paying attention and focussing on my music."[2]

Career

Timomatic's first significant appearance was on the second season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2009, and reached the top eight.[3] In 2010, he went on to play the role of Tyrone in the Australian version of Fame the Musical.[4] In 2011, Timomatic appeared as a contestant on the fifth season of Australia's Got Talent, and came third place.[5] He chose to audition for the show to prove that he was more than just a dancer, and chose Australia's Got Talent over The X Factor because it gave him full control over what he did, from music to styling.[1]

On 12 May 2011, Timomatic released his debut studio album, Welcome, independently.[6] "Save the Dancefloor" was released as a promotional single on 1 August 2011.[7] In October 2011, Timomatic served as a supporting act for American rapper Flo Rida's Australian tour.[8] On 17 November, it was announced that Timomatic has signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia.[9] On 24 November, he was a support act for American hip hop trio Salt-n-Pepa's Australian concert at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney.[10] Timomatic's debut single "Set It Off" was released on 25 November.[11] Timomatic co-wrote "Set It Off" with production team DNA, who also produced the song.[2] The single has so far reached number 17 on the ARIA Singles Chart.[12]
