Tibás Canton

Tibás is the name of the 13th canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 8.15 km²[1], and has a population of 76,815[2]. The capital city of the canton is San Juan.

The canton forms a northern suburb of the national capital city of San José. It is triangular in shape, with the Río Virilla as its northern boundary. The Quebrada Rivera, a canyon, establishes the southwestern limit of the canton and also a portion of the southeastern boundary.

Tibás includes both industrial and residential neighborhoods and is home of one of the most popular football team in Costa Rica, Deportivo Saprissa and its stadium Estadio Ricardo Saprissa. The current mayor is Jorge Salas Bonilla from the center-leftist Citizen Action Party.

The canton of Tibás is subdivided into five districts (distritos):[3]

  2. Cinco Esquinas
  3. Anselmo Llorente
  4. León XIII
  5. Colima

History

The canton was established by law on July 27, 1914. It was formerly known as San Juan del Murciélago.
