Thunstetten is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Thunstetten has an area of 9.7 km2 (3.7 sq mi). Of this area, 57.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 26.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 15.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.2%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Thunstetten has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 3,043.[1] As of 2007, 15.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -1.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (90.3%), with Albanian being second most common ( 2.7%) and Italian being third ( 1.3%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 34.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.8%), the FDP (17.6%) and the Green Party (7.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14.7%. In Thunstetten about 76.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Thunstetten has an unemployment rate of 2.52%. As of 2005, there were 163 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 40 businesses involved in this sector. 876 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 39 businesses in this sector. 540 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 70 businesses in this sector.[3]
