The Thomas A. Edison Academy for Career & Technical Education is a four-year comprehensive public high school in Elizabeth, New Jersey, as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. The Thomas A. Edison Academy For Career & Technical Education is the center for vocational and technical education in the city. Williams' Field, which holds the school's football field and outdoor track field, is adjacent to Thomas A. Edison Academy.

History

Thomas A. Edison High School was built in 1935 and named for the great inventor who worked on many of his major contributions to the scientific and commercial world right here in New Jersey.

Curriculum

The Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Academy serves students in grades 9-12 divided into small learning communities. The program is designed to provide a high degree of academic rigor as well as prepare students to learn a skilled trade. In addition to coursework in their chosen field of study, students will complete a rigorous academic curriculum that includes classes in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language. Honors and AP courses will be offered to all interested students. Students enrolled in the Academy are expected to perform community service and comply with all rules, regulations and policies of the Academy and the district, including the mandatory wearing of school uniforms.

The Elizabeth Public Schools is partnering with The National Academy Foundation and is currently engaged in a Year of Planning - Academy Development Process to establish the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism as a career academy at the Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Academy in September 2010. The Academy of Hospitality & Tourism helps students chart career paths in one of the world's largest industries, from hotel management to sports, entertainment, and event management, and includes the study of geography, economics, and world cultures.

Athletics

The Thomas A. Edison Academy does not have its own athletic teams, instead the students participate in sports that represent the whole city of Elizabeth not just one academy. Therefore being, students from all the Elizabeth Academies including Elizabeth High School are all on one sports team competing against other schools outside the city.

Elizabeth Minutemen compete in the Watchung Conference, a high school sports association under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). The conference consists of public high schools covering Essex County, Hudson County and Union County.

The football team won the 2006 North II, Group IV state sectional championships, defeating Phillipsburg High School, 14-9.[1] The team won the 1999 North II, Group IV sectional championship with a 26-14 win over Montclair High School.[2]

The boys basketball team won the 2003 North II, Group IV title, topping Linden High School 77-72 in the final.[3]

The Elizabeth High School girls rugby team won the title of Northeast Regional Champions in June 2008. They went on to become the 7th-ranked Girls U-19 rugby team in the nation. The team only formed in 2006.
