The Wild Blue, by historian Stephen Ambrose, was published in 2001. The book details the lives and World War II experiences of pilots, bombardier, navigators, radio operators and gunners flying B-24s of the U.S. Army Air Forces against Germany. It includes a recounting of George McGovern's career as a pilot with the 455th Bomb Group in Italy, encompassing 35 bombing missions, which were completed despite bad weather and heavy flak attacks from German anti-aircraft guns.

It has been alleged that Ambrose plagiarized parts of the book by copying text from endnote sources. [1]
