History

The Mail Boxes Etc. concept was introduced in 1980 as an alternative to the post office[1]. In 2001, UPS acquired Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. The two companies introduced The UPS Store brand in 2003, and approximately 3,000 locations were re-branded. This allowed those franchises to offer lower UPS-direct shipping rates. In the year following the re-branding, Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. sold more than 500 new The UPS Store franchise locations in the United States. The UPS Store provides convenient business solutions and reliable customer experience. The UPS Store franchise locations remain locally owned and operated.

Products and Services

The UPS Store franchises offer consumers and small businesses a wide range of products and services[5][6] in a single location, including domestic and international shipping, packaging, printing, mailbox services, postal services, moving supplies and other business services.

Printing Services

Advertised as a one-stop shop for consumers and small businesses, The UPS Store has a wide range of document-related services. Printing services include:

  • Digital Printing and Copying – From full-color to black-and-white, digital printing and copying options are available. The UPS Store can help consumers and businesses produce produce customized, original documents, including marketing and training materials, flyers, newsletters, posters, banners and more.
  • Document Finishing – The UPS Store can finish documents to help complete projects. They offer binding, laminating, folding, padding, collating, cutting and drilling options.
  • Custom Printing – The UPS Store franchise locations have professional custom printing solutions designed for both personal and business printing needs, including stationery, business cards, labels, forms, rubber stamps and more.

Mailbox and Postal Services

The UPS Store offers customers a mailbox solution that includes a real street address and, at most locations, 24-hour access to mail and package deliveries. Mailbox holders can select to receive an email or text when they have a package waiting, eliminating unnecessary trips. Additional mailbox services include mail forwarding, fax receiving and package acceptance from all shipping carriers.

Corporate Retail Solutions

Corporate Retail Solutions (CRS) is a program designed to foster long-term relationships between The UPS Store franchise locations and enterprise clients. This program provides clients viable business solutions that allow them to improve their operations and enhance the customer service experience[7][8][9][10][11][12].

Locations

The UPS Store has more than 4,700 independently owned locations[1] within the United States and abroad. The UPS Store franchise locations offer convenient and value-added business services to small-office/home-office (SOHO) marketing, corporate offices and consumers.

In addition to traditional locations in shopping centers and commercial complexes, The UPS Store locations can be found on college campuses, military bases, convention centers, hotels and urban renewal areas/empowerment zones in order to provide more convenient locations to specific groups of customers.

Franchises

The UPS Store franchise opportunities are available to “qualifying entrepreneurs[13][14][3][1][14][15][16][17][18].” The UPS Store has development opportunities throughout the United States. A Franchise Development Team[14] is available to guide potential The UPS Store franchise owners through the process of business ownership.

Through an association with Franchise America Finance™ and The Bancorp Bank, The UPS Store offers a national funding option for qualified franchisee candidates[19].

The UPS Store provides financial incentives[20] to qualifying U.S. military veterans, including $10,000 off the franchise fee of a new The UPS Store location and 75% off the initial application fee (applied toward the total franchise fee).

Industry Recognition

The UPS Store has been named the No. 1 postal and business services franchise[1] for 21 consecutive years by Entrepreneur Magazine in their annual “Franchise 500.” USA Today and G.I. Jobs named The UPS Store franchise opportunity in the 50 Top Franchises for Military Veterans[21]. The UPS Store franchise network was named American Brand Excellence Award Winner in the Retail category by City Business Journals.

Community Relations

The UPS Store network works with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to provide books to less fortunate children through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. Many The UPS Store franchise locations take an active role in the local communities through these programs.

Launched in March 2008, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program is the first year-round initiative of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. This program offers the nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and succeed in life by providing them direct access to books and educational resources. The UPS Store franchise locations raise money throughout the year through a variety of activities. One hundred percent of all proceeds raised support local children and literacy programs. According to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, more than $1.7 million has been contributed to the program since its inception.
