History

The Public Record began publication in September 1999 as a semi-monthly, and changed to a weekly in April, 2000.

Circulation consists of over 11,000 copies mailed to homes and offices, and the remaining 30,000 or more circulated in street boxes and at neighborhood businesses.[2]

Criticism

After former Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Fumo was sentenced to 45 months in federal prison, The Public Record printed a front page article, "Fumo has a future," by Joe Shaheeli, in the July 16, 2009, issue.[3] Philadelphia CityPaper quoted the entire article in its July 20 issue, with a comment, "It is worth bearing in mind as you read this that the publisher and editor of the Public Record is former Councilman Jim Tayoun, who served time for corruption."[4]

Though Fumo will spend a total of 55 months in prison, there is no doubt he will return to Philadelphia a folk hero, much like some of the other political leaders in the past who served their time, but came back with their constituencies relatively well intact. In fact, if it were not for a Pennsylvania law prohibiting felons from holding office, many of them would have easily been reelected to the offices they had held.
