Plot summary

In this episode, Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the shooting deaths of an investigative reporter and his fiancée.

While investigating, Goren works his way from the driver of the vehicle, to the shooter who used the driver in the getaway, to the men who hired the shooter, up and up and up the ladder. Then, he learns that the reporter had a history of uncovering police corruption, and the case leads to the buying and selling of pardons. When the detectives close in on the shooter, they discover dotted lines that connect to organized crime and possibly the governor's office.

Meanwhile, the detectives take heat from Captain Deakins when their investigation connects them to the power elite. But Goren and Eames focus on a key evidence that a bribe was paid at the high state office. In the end, ADA Carver makes an ethically questionable deal to close the case, much to the detectives' disgust.
