History

The first Original Pancake House opened in 1953 in Portland, Oregon by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke,[2] who collected recipes for their restaurant from around the world.[1] They soon franchised the name and recipes[3] into locations spanning over more than half of the U.S. states.[4] They are known for their breakfast foods; their signature dishes are the Apple Pancake, Dutch Baby and omelets. They have over 100 franchised locations throughout the United States,[4] and are popular from Seattle[5] to Fort Lee,[3] from Wilmette,[6][7] to Williamsville,[8] from Honolulu[9] to its headquarters in Portland.[10][11]

Chef and food critic James Beard, who grew up in Portland, named The Original Pancake House as one of the top ten "best" in America. In 1999, the Original Pancake House in Portland received a James Beard Foundation Award as an American Classic.[12]

"Chain restaurants in northern New Jersey are a dime a couple of dozen.... Very rarely you may find individual establishments that do an exceptional job. One such place is the recently opened Original Pancake House, in Fort Lee, where Peter Rentzis and his family have created a magnet for breakfast lovers. They use only fresh ingredients, cooked from scratch, and the only links they have to the 90-store parent chain are a book of recipes and the right to use its trademarks. Two other Original Pancake Houses owned by the Rentzises, in Whippany and West Orange, have had a devoted following for 15 years."

"As a longtime proponent of the Original Pancake House, this food-snob agrees with the Eater who insists, "I haven't met a pancake I didn't like there." My family favors the Parkplace location in Kirkland, where we always order the mile-high, cinnamon-scented apple pancake before lighting into everything from the Swedish pancakes (lingonberries? Ya, sure!) to the trademarked 49'er Flap Jacks."

"By this time all of us were quite full so we mentally prepared ourselves for the advent of the Apple Pancake. The entire restaurant watched and smelled the waves of cinnamon-scented air as it made it's [sic] progress across the room to our table. The egg batter base was mounded with sliced apples bathed in a shiny coat of Korintji cinnamon glaze.... It was huge and beautiful and very hot. We literally sat and stared at it for a few minutes waiting for it to cool down a bit."
