Tex Kinnane, an American detective (Jock Mahoney), is sent to Australia to investigate a series of robberies in a small Australian town. He is helped by barmaid Stella Gret (Veda Ann Borg).
The film was based on a story by Australian writer, Tony Scott Veitch, but rewritten by an American screenwriter. John English was originally announced as director, but was later replaced by Lesley Selander.[2]
It was shot on location in Australia from February 1950 at Sofala and Sydney, using an American director, cinematographer and four imported actors. Douglas Dumbrille had previously appeared in another Australian-set Western, Captain Fury (1939). It was an early star role for stunt man Jock Mahoney. Filming took three months.
It was a co-production between Britain and Australia with British investment coming from Ealing Studios. The film is an example of a "meat pie" Western.
The movie was meant to be the first of a series of co-productions involving the McCreadie Brothers' Embassy Pictures but this did not eventuate.[3]
