Thane is a railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network.
The station has ten platforms; platform numbers 1 to 4 are reserved for slow trains and platform numbers 5 to 7 for fast trains & long distance trains, 9 and 10 for trains going towards Vashi/Panvel.

Thane was the terminus for the first ever passenger train in India. On 16 April 1853, the first passenger train service was inaugurated between Bori Bunder (Now renamed Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus), Mumbai and Thane.[1] Covering a distance of 34 kilometres (21 mi), it was hauled by three locomotives, Sahib, Sindh and Sultan.
Thane railway station is connected via the Central Railway to South Mumbai and remote places like Karjat, Khopoli and Kasara (via Kalyan Jn). Thane is a halt for all the fast trains on the Central Railway. During the peak hour, there is a fast train halting every few minutes. It is also an origin (starting) and destination (ending) point of most of the local suburban trains. The suburban local trains go "upwards" (a phrase used by the railways) towards CST and "downwards" towards Karjat & Kasara. It is a halt for all the fast trains on the Central Railway. Thane has three stations, Thane, Kalva and Mumbra. It is the third busiest railway station after CST & Dadar(Central).
Thane has gained new importance as a railway link to Navi Mumbai due to the Thane-Vashi/Nerul and Thane -Panvel local train line.
Trans-Harbour line: Thane-Vashi/Nerul and Thane - Panvel local train line. This line runs many trains between Thane and Vashi, the principal node of Navi Mumbai, passing through Airoli, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Turbhe and Sanpada. Thane has gained new importance as a railway link to Navi Mumbai due to the Thane-Vashi/Nerul and Thane -Panvel local train line. Since Feb 2010 new fast trains have started between Thane Panvel- Stopping at KoparKahirane,Neral,Belapur. Almost all trains going to Konkan railway from Mumbai stop at Thane. It is the origin and destination point of all the harbour local suburban trains.
In Thane most long distance express trains halt after CST, Dadar (Central), Kalyan & Karjat/Kasara. Almost all trains going to Konkan railway from Mumbai stop at Thane. Most trains going to Pune and Nashik stop at Thane. If any train does not stop at Thane then Kalyan or Dadar is the nearest station.
