Ternaard is a village in the municipality Dongeradeel located in the northeast of the province of Friesland between Dokkum and the Wadden Sea.

History

Around 800 appeared for the first time on Ternaard, called Tununfurt . Later also the names Tunawert, Thunewerd, Tonauwer, Tijnnawerdt, Tennaard used. In the words Furt, Wert and werdt was wierde intended. What Tunun means is unknown, possibly became one of the Thunder and Odin intended. Ternaard with about 1420 inhabitants of the larger villages in the Dongeradeel. Ternaard previously heard in the town Dongeradeel West. The mayor of the municipality was in Ternaard. In the municipal reorganization in the province of Friesland (1984), the municipality Dongeradeel West merged with the municipality and the city Oostdongeradeel Dokkum in the new Dongeradeel.

In Ternaard is a neighborhood supermarket, butchers, kindergarten, an elementary school, two GP practices, health center, a homeopathic practice and a retirement home. There is also a bus service to Dokkum and Leeuwarden.

Ternaard in sport has a billiard club, a football club, a tennis club a bounce, a bocce and volleyball.
