Tandur (Telugu: తాండూరు; also known as Tanduru) is a municipal town and mandal in Rangareddy district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Tandur is 125 km from Hyderabad by bus and 110 km by train. Tandur is the largest town in western Rangareddy district and the largest Municipality in Rangareddy dist. It is famous for stone industries, cement industries and Redgram(Pigeon pea) production. Many education centres are located there. Drinking water is supplied from the River Kagna, which is 4 km from the town. Tandur town is part of Tandur assembly constituency and Chevella loksabha constituency. P. Mahender Reddy of Telugudesham party is present MLA of Tandur assembly constituency. Previous MLAs of this constituency who served as ministers in state cabinet are Manik Rao and Chandra Sekhar Rao.

Geography

Tandur is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 450 metres (1476 feet). Tandur town is 110 km from Hyderabad, capital city of Andhra Pradesh state. It is well connected with other neighboring towns like Zaheerabad (60 km), Sangareddy (50 km), Mahabubnagar (80 km) and Vikarabad (40 km). The major railway station is located on Secunderabad-Wadi section of Mumbai route. Tandur Town the famous temples i.e. Bakka Prabhu Temple, constructed in 1940, Bhavigi Bhadreshwar Temple situated exactly at the Main junction and the famous mosques of Tandur are Jamia Masjid and Madina Masjid

Tandur Stone

Tandur is known for its blue & Yellow colored Limestone. Tandur is the main producer and distributor for blue color limestone which can be used for flooring, wall cladding and even for the slabs. The slabs of the old houses are made of stones even. It had a strong quarry association with approximately 500 members, by name Tandur Mandal Quarry Welfare Association. It also had a strong association of above 500 polishing units under the name of Tandur Merchants welfare Association with strong body which lobbies for its members.

Ancient History

Tandur had great history during pre Nizams.It has been said that the Nizams of Hyderabad use to visit Tandur for Hunting purposes. There was a Business giant Yusuf seth who use to arrange the grand welcome to the Rulers of hyderabad.The rich vegetation and varied wildlife of those days was the prime reason. But now deforestation on high scale has denuded the area of wildlife.They used to travel from Golconda to Tandur via Vikarabad which tooks 15 days of Journey.Stone slabs were produced in those days even & majority of the stones slabs were exported to other parts of India.The Unique old houses are the living proof of peoples creativity.The old houses of Tandur city were built of Mud walls and Stones slabs on wooden supports.The history of the Tandur town was flourishing & prospering. Like in any developing town, the old and new areas are clearly discernible. The old houses area is called old Tandur and new localities form part of new Tandur. The railway track divides old and new Tandur.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Tandur had a population of 57,943. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tandur has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy stands at 52%. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Ex Chief Minister of Andhrapradesh Mr. M.Chenna Reddy elected two times as MLA from Tandur Assembly Constituency. Congress Party and Telugu Desam are major political parties of this constituency. Bharatiya Janata Party also gained many votes in Loksabha elections during 1990s. Nagaram Narsimulu of BJP elected as Municipal Chairperson a decade back. TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) has emerged into one of the major parties in Tandur. The Present MLA of Tandur is Dr.P.Mahender Reddy Present M.P :S.Jaipal Reddy (Petroleum Minister in the Union Cabinet)

Features

Tandur is famous for its blue and black stone and toor daal (yellow gram) and Jowar. It has good number of rice mills and stone polishing units. Major industries include gemstone exports and cement manufacturing. Three major cement firms are headquartered in Tandur - Cement Corporation Of India (CCI) and VCIL (Vishaka Cement Industry Ltd) which is also called India Cements (ICL), Penna Cement Industries LTD. A Sri Rama Temple is located at Juntapally, which is a historic temple and has some historic resemblances to other Sri Rama shrines. It is located 12 km from Tandur. It is said that The God himself has created the beautiful Srirama's shaligramme idol. It is only of its kind since Lord Srirama bears Aadishesha over His head. One astonishing fact about the idol is that the sacred water flows continuously through God's navel irrespective of the seasons and its source is a mystery. People come to fulfill their wishes before a tree said to be Kalpavriksha which is right before The God. Equally surprising is this trees flowers which blossom in the night and are strewn before the dawn takes place. River Kagna, a sub-river of Krishna supplies the drinking water for over 45 villages, including Tandur town. This rivulet is four kilometres away from Tandur on the way to Kodangal.

The famous Rasoolpoor Hanuman Temple, is located 4 kilometres from Tandur. Near Tattepally, (Tandur-Zaheerabad route) is a serene Ambramaneswar shrine, dedicated to Lord Siva, nestled in a green valley. People throng the shrine once a year on the last Monday of Sravana masam.

Further down is Turmamidi, hosting Sri Venkateswara shrine, whose annual rath yatra is held on Chaitra Purnima (in April).

Tandur had a fame in the Period of Nizams, when rulers used to camp at Tandur in the Passion of hunting and use to stay up to a month or so (Sources-Archives-Hyd).
