Other modes

Occasionally, challenges will be issued to the player. If the player succeeds in completing the challenge, additional decorating items will be unlocked.

Also, in normal mode, player may choose a few other modes and difficulties to enhance gameplay, the modes are accessible via the options menu in song selection screen, as well as the difficulty

The modes are as follow:

1. Auto (オート)

Lets the computer play, mainly to get the song's tempo and music before playing for the real deal. The computer features a perfect full combo, but you won't get any points, represented as a mecha taiko.

Increases the song's speed by around 50%, perfect to speed up slow songs with which you're not accustomed to (usually this happens after playing oni mode for too long), represented as a tiger.

Doubles the song's speed, becomes a bit fast, represented as a smiling tiger.

Increases the song's speed by around 150%, this presents challenge to any song, and is extremely fast. Represented as a laughing tiger. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the hard difficulty.

5. Doron (ドロン)(unlockable)

Removes the notes, leaving only katakana kuchi shoga words as cues, represented as a shuriken. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the normal difficulty.

Perfect challenge mode, automatically cuts the song when you miss, causing a failure, needing to get a full combo to finish, represented as a king taiko. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the Oni level.

Reverse mode, changes don (red notes) to kat (blue notes), while kat changes to don, represented as a purple taiko. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the easy level.

There are also sound effects to change on the taiko, the following ones are included:

Difficulty

Taiko no Tatsujin DS features four level of difficulty. The song and tempo remains the same. However, the number of notes and their variation (the distance between notes, what kind of notes used) differs between the difficulties. Also, there is a general difficulty indicator for each song, represented by stars beside the song's name. The plants used to signify the first three levels are a traditional Japanese ranking system.

The four difficulties are as follows:

Represented by ume flowers.

2. Futsuu (Normal) (ふつう)

Represented by bamboo.

Represented by pine.

4. Oni (Demonic) (おに) (unlockable)

Represented by a demon. Clear 20 songs on Hard level to unlock.
