The TOZ 17-01 is a popular bolt-action .22 rifle made by the TOZ firearms company based in Tula, Russia, intended for professional and amateur hunting and sport shooting
It is known for being accurate and is common in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The rifles commonly came with a 5-round detachable magazine.
The rifle itself is basic but built strong. Standard model 17 has the bolt with a rear safety much similar to the old BSA rifle type on such models as the BSA Sportsman. TOZ made an updated version called the 17-01 around 1978. These were a similar version as the standard model. Major changes in this were few. Most obvious was the side safety close to the bolt action. It is a standard trigger blocking device that blocks the trigger group from striking the sear.
The rifle is extremely well built and accurate. Barrel length is not as long as most standard rifles, as it is a more carbine-style rifle. The bore is anodized; which makes for a long lasting rifle.
The receiver has a standard dovetail mount for allowing a scope, but requires high rings to allow the scope to get over the rear sight. The length of pull for the stock is quite standard for this carbine-style rifle.
These rifles were produced when Russia existed as the USSR; and thus most are stamped "Made in Soviet Union". Other standard markings include the stamp of the Tula Arsenal and a serial number.
The magazines are hard to come by. Many owners have over time lost the magazine. Currently, no excellent copies of the magazine have been fabricated.
The rifle has been updated to become the TOZ-78; available in both semi-automatic and bolt action. It features the same strength and reliability as the TOZ-17.
