The seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing commenced on BBC One on 18 September 2009. Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly returned as presenters together with Craig Revel Horwood, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli as judges. Series 5 winner, Alesha Dixon, joined the judging panel, replacing Arlene Phillips.[1] Darcey Bussell was a guest judge from the quarter final onwards.[1]

Series 6 winner Camilla Dallerup, series 4 winner Karen Hardy and Hayley Holt were replaced as professional female dancers by Aliona Vilani, Katya Virshilas and Natalie Lowe.[2] The show on 7 November was filmed from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom for the first time since the Grand Final of series 2.[3] Due to illness, Bruce Forsyth did not feature in the show on 14 November. As a result, Tess Daly took over as main presenter and Ronnie Corbett was a surprise guest. Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two host Claudia Winkleman took over Daly's normal role.[4]

Series 7 was won by sports presenter Chris Hollins and his professional partner Ola Jordan.

The show

The couples danced each week in a live show. For the first two weeks, the couples danced ballroom on Friday and Latin on Saturday (the couples were split in to two groups but not men and women like previous years); from the third week all the couples danced on Saturday only. Each judge scores them out of ten, giving them a total score out of forty (fifty from Quarter Final onwards). The couples are ranked according to the judges' scores and given points according to their rank, with the lowest scored couple receiving one point, and the highest scored couple receiving the most points (the maximum number of points available depends on the number of couples remaining in the competition). The public are able to vote for their favourite couples, and the couples are ranked again according to the number of votes they receive, again receiving points – the couple with the fewest votes receiving one point, and the couple with the most votes receiving the most points.

The points for judges' score and public vote are then added together, and the two couples with the fewest points are placed in the bottom two (if two couples have equal points, the points from the public vote are given precedence). As with the two previous series, the bottom two couples will have to perform a dance-off. Based on that performance alone, each judge then votes on which couple should stay and which couple should leave, with Goodman (as head judge) having the last and casting vote. Unlike the previous series, there was no results show (except for the last three weeks when it was on the same night), instead there was a single extended programme on Saturday evenings.[5]

Series 7 saw the first new dances added to the competition since Series 4. The three new dances were the Charleston and the Rock 'n' Roll in Week 11 and the Lindyhop in The Final. Additionally, the couples' Showdances in the final were scored by the judges for the first time since series 1.

The celebrity participants for the seventh series were, as in previous years, the subject of extensive rumour-mongering throughout the summer of 2009. British media erroneously claimed appearances by Sharon Osbourne, former X Factor judge;[6][7] talk-show hosts Richard and Judy;[8] and Amy Winehouse.[9] The rumours surrounding Osbourne in particular caused an extensive wild-goose chase, prompting several major newspapers to run conflicting stories ranging from "already signed [the] deal", to "ended discussions after one speculative phone call",[10] before finally walking out in what was alleged to be a dispute over pay.[10][11][12] Osbourne herself refuted this allegation, saying instead that she "just couldn't be arsed to do it... I seriously considered it for a while but basically I'm a lazy old cow. Several newspapers said I wasn't doing it because they weren't paying me enough money. But that's rubbish..."[13] The Daily Mirror was later forced to print a correction withdrawing the story, which it had first broken in July 2009.[14]

The Daily Mail claimed that the final line-up, of which it said "underwhelming would be an understatement",[10] resulted from the BBC's failure to secure bigger celebrities such as Osbourne, Sarah, Duchess of York, Linford Christie, and Cliff Richard, all of whom it claimed were approached by the programme.[10][15][16] The BBC pointed out that "[they] talk to a huge amount of people at the start of the process... It's a very lengthy selection procedure..."[17] Responding specifically to Osbourne's withdrawal, the spokesmen said "We have no idea where this news story has come from. We have never signed Osbourne",[17] also noting that, since Osbourne had never formally signed for the show, she was in no position to "quit" anything.[12]

Retired jockey Richard Dunwoody, and former boxing world-champion Joe Calzaghe, were the first participants to be correctly identified by the British press.[18][19] The sporting pair, who were quickly given odds to win the competition of 25–1 and 5–1 (Calzaghe was the favourite to win the competition in August 2009),[20] were swiftly joined by former England cricketer Phil Tufnell, former tennis world champion Martina Hingis, and Olympic athlete Jade Johnson,[18] bringing the total number of sporting celebrities to five, an increase on previous years.[21][22] They were swiftly joined by actress and former EastEnders cast member Natalie Cassidy,[23] The Bill star Ali Bastian,[15] and Zöe Lucker, best-known from Footballers' Wives.[24] A number of sources interpreted the signing of Lynda Bellingham, 61, and Jo Wood, 53, as an attempt by the BBC to defuse the ageism row surrounding the departure of Phillips and Hardy.[25][26] The Daily Mirror quoted a BBC source saying "Lynda is a great signing and hopefully her appearance helps to illustrate that there is no age bias".[25]

The BBC publicised the official line-up on 25 August 2009, adding actors Craig Kelly, Ricky Groves, Laila Rouass and Ricky Whittle to the media's speculations.[27] Current BBC television personalities Rav Wilding and Chris Hollins completed the line-up. The Daily Mail claimed that those with existing BBC contracts were paid less than the other celebrities, who were receiving £25,000 each to appear on the show; claiming further that "at least one [celebrity] was offered significantly more".[10]

Dance-offs

As head judge, Len Goodman votes only when a casting vote is needed: if all three junior judges vote to save the same couple, Goodman's vote would not affect the outcome. There was no dance-off after the quarter final stage.[28]

In September 2009 Strictly Come Dancing earned a place in Guinness World Records as "most successful reality television format",[30] with licensing rights sold to broadcasters in 38 countries.[31] Nonetheless the sixth series' audiences had suffered as a result of direct clashes with ITV rival The X Factor.[32] The BBC's decision in August 2009 to screen the seventh series on Saturday nights only was partly an attempt to reduce conflict with the rival talent show, as ITV had hinted that The X Factor's results show would be broadcast on Sunday evening.[33] Sources at the BBC described the move as "better for the viewers... people at home lose out if things are competing against one another... We wanted to make Strictly Come Dancing an unmissable TV event".[33]

However, the BBC still came under intense criticism when the extended Saturday show, initially running from 7–9pm, clashed almost entirely with The X Factor's main show.[34] ITV sources accused the BBC of "effectively splitting the audience".[34] Writing in The Guardian George Dixon, head of scheduling for BBC One, argued that "the ability of viewers to see programmes again, whether via personal video recorders like Sky+, online catch-up services including iPlayer or on channels such as E4 or ITV2, [makes] the notion of 'forcing' viewers to watch... outdated", adding that "There are around seven repeats of The X Factor on ITV1 and ITV2 each week".[35]

The scheduling conflict ended with The X Factor securing a higher audience throughout the series. On 22 October 2009, the BBC rescheduled the Saturday show, now down to eight contestants, so that the overlap between the two programs was only 45 minutes.[36] The BBC denied that the move was in direct response to the success of its ITV rival, saying instead that the move was to accommodate a new series with impressionist Jon Culshaw.[36] Strictly Come Dancing's runtime, previously fixed at two hours, was also expected to decrease as contestants were progressively eliminated, leading to a further reduction in overlap.

Notes

  1. ^ Due to a knee injury sustained in the dress rehearsal for the 14 November show, Johnson was medically disqualified from dancing in the live show the same evening; the Tango, while rehearsed, was never performed competitively. A recovered Johnson went on to perform her tango in full during the previous contestants megamix in the final.
  2. ^ As Johnson withdrew on 21 November show, she never performed her Rumba..
