Strete is a village and civil parish in the South Hams district of Devon, England. It lies on the A379 road about three miles south-west of the town of Dartmouth, at the north end of Slapton Sands and within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The first documentary mention of the place was as Strete (an old spelling of the word street) in 1244, providing evidence that the main road through the village is of ancient origin.[1] Until 1881 Strete was part of Blackawton parish and there a small medieval chapel of ease here until 1836 when the present church, dedicated to St Michael, was built on the same site and incorporating the chapel's tower.[2][3]
Strete was one of the parishes evacuated in 1943–4 as part of Exercise Tiger. In 2001 the population of the parish was 520.[2]
