Stonegate's development coincided with the construction of an overpass of Clarence Avenue South over Circle Drive, replacing the signalized at-grade intersection.[1][2] Shopping centre developer SmartCentres Inc. (formerly First Pro) paid for 20% of the roadway construction, which was near $20 million. While the overpass was being constructed, traffic wanting to enter Stonegate had to use Circle Drive up to a temporary intersection at Brand Court, going through the Saskatoon Auto Mall. The interchange was completed and opened to traffic on November 20, 2007.
Construction began in at Stonegate in the summer of 2006, and the first stores opened in January 2007.
