Stephen Stewart Smalley was Dean of Chester in the last part of the 20th century[1] and the first year of the 21st,[2] and an eminent Anglican scholar.[3]
Born in 1931 and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, he was Assistant Curate at St Paul’s, Portman Square and then Chaplain of Peterhouse, Cambridge. From 1960 to 1969 he was a Lecturer at the University of Ibadan. He was then Senior Lecturer in New Testament studies at the University of Manchester and finally (before his elevation to the Deanery) a Canon Residentiary at Coventry Cathedral.
