The role of Stephanie was originally created for actress Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie, of Days) fame. But after Hayes turned it down, the producers contacted Hayes' former Days co-star Susan Flannery, and she eventually won the role. Hayes did, however, appear in 2003 as Joanna Manning (Lauren Fenmore´s mother) in one episode. Stephanie has been played since the show's beginning in 1987 by Flannery, who, besides playing Stephanie, has also directed some of the show's episodes.
Stephanie, who was born in the Chicago area, is best known for her strength of character and her determination to protect her family. She thinks she clearly knows what is best for her family and doesn't hesitate to guide them in whatever direction that is. She is a loving mother with boldness and strength that would do anything for her loved ones.
Stephanie Douglas the daughter of wealthy Chicago businessman John Douglas attended Northwestern University. Stephanie begins dating her childhood friend Massimo Marone and while on a trip to Lake Geneva they sleep together and conceive Ridge. Stephanie had a one-night stand with Eric Forrester which had been reported in the "Soap Opera Digest" when it was first revealed. She was at a frat party and she slept with Eric who was drunk. Stephanie hadn't really known Eric at the time but just watch him from afar with his then fiancee Beth Henderson. She went to the frat party and one thing led to another. He later discovered her father had wealth and connections. Eric was going to marry his fiancee at the time Beth Henderson but when Stephanie found out she was pregnant she assumed the baby was Eric's and they get married. Eric broke things off with Beth and Stephanie breaks up with Massimo. Eric also married Stephanie due to the powerful status her father had in the community. Stephanie convinced her father to loan Eric $50,000 that led to Eric and Stephanie creating the powerful Forrester Creations fashion house in L.A.. Beth settled for Stephen Logan and the marriage suffered hardship due to Beth constantly comparing him to Eric her lost love. Massimo goes on to build a shipping empire but does not marry her because she purposely hid the possibilities of him being the father from her. Massimo also attested that Stephanie was somewhat of a wild woman back in college and nothing like she is today regarding a woman preaching about having ethics and integrity and conservative values. He even insinuated she was a lot like Amber Moore.
She has been married to Eric Forrester (John McCook), whom she met and married while attending Northwestern University and had four children with him: Thorne (Winsor Harmon), Angela (deceased) Kristen (Tracy Lindsey Melchior), and Felicia (Lesli Kay) .
Her oldest son, Ridge (Ronn Moss), was fathered by Massimo Marone (Joseph Mascolo),but raised by Eric. Stephanie honestly and desperately believed that Eric fathered Ridge. Eric decided to tell Beth that he had to leave her due to Stephanie's pregnancy.
It wasn't until forty years later that everyone learned Ridge's father was Massimo Marone. Ridge considers Eric Forrester his father, since he raised him from childhood. Stephanie has two stepchildren Rick (Kyle Lowder) and Bridget (Ashley Jones)from Eric's affair and later marriage to Brooke Logan, who is Beth Henderson-Logan's eldest daughter.
She is also a grandmother. Her grandchildren include Ridge's sons, Thomas (Drew Tyler Bell) and R.J. (Trevor and Preston Shores); Ridge's twin daughters Phoebe (MacKenzie Mauzy) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) who is named after her. She is also grandmother to Felicia's son Dino Damiano (Eric and Jacob Steinberger); Kristen's adopted son, Zende (Daniel Smith); and Thorne's daughter, Alexandria (Harley Graham).
Stephanie currently owns 25% of Forrester Creations.
Stephanie dealt with some residual pain which she had hidden for many years. She went to see her friend, psychiatrist and former daughter-in-law, Dr. Taylor Hayes (Hunter Tylo) about how to repair her strained marriage. It came out that while she was growing up, her father abused her terribly, and her mother, Ann Douglas (Betty White), did nothing to protect her. Since she had no control over being abused when she was a little girl, Stephanie felt she had to have control as an adult, so she wouldn't be hurt again. This would explain why she was perceived as manipulative.
With that in mind, she and Eric went to Chicago to confront Ann over the events of her childhood. However, Ann refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing on the part of Stephanie's father. A few days later, however, Ann, along with her other daughter, Stephanie's younger sister Pamela (Alley Mills), showed up on Stephanie's doorstep in Los Angeles asking for forgiveness.
At first, Stephanie didn't want to even entertain the idea of forgiving her mother, although she did accept her apology, albeit half-heartedly. Then Eric invited Ann and Pamela to their Christmas celebration. Despite pleas from Pamela and Taylor, Stephanie wanted Ann to leave. It took her youngest granddaughter, Thorne's daughter, Alexandria, to help her. When Alexandria took Ann's hand during the singing of Christmas carols, something moved in Stephanie. In a show of strength and love, she forgave her mother and allowed her to stay.
Usually Stephanie wants nothing to do with the Logan family, given the trouble she thinks they have caused her and her family; however, she has now struck up a friendship with the youngest Logan, Katie, being grateful to her for telling Thorne the truth about his former fiancee Donna and their impending wedding being stopped. According to her, Katie is the "only decent Logan on the family tree."
Stephanie's main rivalry had always been that with Brooke Logan, the daughter of Eric's former college sweetheart and fiancee, Beth Henderson (Judith Baldwin, Nancy Burnett. Robin Riker). She first met her when Brooke and her mother were hired to cater a party. The animosity between Brooke and Stephanie has always been one-sided.The main reason Stephanie hates her is because she doesn't want Brooke and Ridge to be married and this is what started the problems at the beginning of the show's history. Stephanie saw Brooke as a 'gold digger from the valley' bent on marrying it rich.
Stephanie sees herself as a woman of high morals and integrity, but there have been times when her methods have been less than honourable even if it was used to protect her family. She is not above withholding information and manipulating to protect the people in her life. As for that there were times that her actions have alienated her from those she so fiercely protects.
After Ridge suffered a near fatal heart attack, Stephanie blamed herself for it and did an about face on her attitude to Brooke. She gave her half the company as a show of goodwill. This goodwill was thrown in her face when Brooke married Nick (Jack Wagner)and after Taylor Hayes sold them two percent of shares Nick, giving them 52 percent of the company. Despite the pain this caused Stephanie, she stood firm in her resolve to let Ridge have his Logan. Events have so transpired that the 'old' Stephanie is now back and the vendetta is back on.
The animosity between Brooke and Stephanie became even more pronounced and heated when Brooke was out and her children, Hope and R.J were left alone. (Brooke's sister, Donna was supposedly watching them and was called away) This spurred Stephanie to call the Children's Protective Service, who sent a friend of hers Mrs. Dorothy Bascomb, to check into the allegations. Brooke fell asleep in her car just right outside her home due to the stress of not being able to choose which man, Nick or Ridge, she wanted, but the children weren't taken at that time. After an accidental fire; caused by Hope who was playing with a lighter left by Nick Marone, Stephanie and Mrs. Bascomb took Brooke to court, which eventually caused her to lose custody and Ridge had to take RJ and asked the courts to allow him to take RJ's sister Hope with him as well.
In what some would say would be a real desperate act, Stephanie convinced a sleazy lawyer named Andy Johnson to flirt with Brooke, in the hopes that she would lose custody of the children permanently to Ridge. However, Andy chose to attack and rape Brooke. Stephanie was horrified by the act. When the rape was discovered by Ridge, he furiously took off after Andy, who had grabbed an electrical antenna to ward him off. Andy was distracted by a security guard and a flock of pigeons which backed him into a transformer, and was immediately electrocuted. (The death was ruled an accident) Then Ridge dropped the custody suit and reunited Brooke and the children, much to Stephanie's dismay.
Despite Brooke telling her that she was not welcome, Stephanie went over to her house anyway, intent on apologizing to her. Brooke shocked Stephanie by telling her the whole sordid story, how Andy broke in, and attacked her in her own home. This shocked Stephanie to the core.
Stephanie's relationship with her ex-husband, Eric, is also a main part of the storyline. The first few years the marriage was idealic, but Stephanie grew more in control while Eric started affairs with younger models. She even kicked Eric in his crouch after she thought he betrayed her. Eric Forrester and Stephanie Douglas have been through three divorces and has split many more times over the years, but always seem to come back together. Eric has had affairs with and married Brooke Logan, her sister Donna Logan and Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown),and was "engaged" to Jackie Payne (Lesley-Anne Down) and Lauren Fenmore, while he was separated from Stephanie Forrester.
Stephanie was angered yet again, after Eric was bullied into selling the company to Nick Marone, with the intention of protecting Stephanie. Nick had threatened to file charges against Stephanie, for the accident in which his mother was seriously injured,if the Forresters did not sell their company to him. When Stephanie discovered it, she was furious, but later realized that Eric was protecting her from going to jail. This solidified her animosity towards Nick and Jackie.
However, recently, Stephanie discovered that Jackie, when Nick was younger, slept with sailors for money. Stephanie ended up using this as ammunition against Jackie and Nick to force them to selling Forrester back to Eric and their family. This has incurred the wrath of Eric against Stephanie and has once again placed their marriage in jeopardy. After losing Forrester Creations, they helped begin Forrester Originals.
To allow things to calm down, Stephanie spent some time in Chicago, repairing her relationship with her mother, Ann, while Pamela took care of things in Los Angeles. Whilst she was in Chicago, Pamela succeeded in turning the usually cold and formal Forrester house into a home. For this, she won the gratitude of her brother in-law. She also began to have a crush on Eric.
Stephanie came back, and was stunned to discover that Eric had, behind her back, offered Ann to move to Los Angeles; (he had found a condo in Santa Monica that she would like) and has offered Pamela (and eventually Ann herself) to move into one of the two guest cottages on the Forrester grounds. Stephanie was furious that Eric would extend that to her family, but Eric pointedly explained that it was time for Stephanie to be there for her mother, and to let Pamela have a life of her own. Also, it turned out that Stephanie may have another rival for Eric's affections, that of her own sister. She and Pamela had a confrontation on that front, but Pamela, although shy, can be assertive when she needs to be, and put her foot down to her sister. However, Pamela suddenly disappeared, supposedly after an argument between her, Ann and Stephanie, which resulted in her mother and sister returning to Chicago.
The situation with Brooke and her children has caused the rift between Eric and Stephanie to widen even farther. Eric promised Brooke, Donna and Katie that no more will Stephanie harass them. In fact, Nick has offered Eric to buy back Forrester Creations once again, provided that he divorces Stephanie, a situation that seems to be coming to pass, since Eric is even more furious with her over her part in Brooke's rape. Eric accepted Nick's offer, including the divorce stipulation.
On October 19, 2007, Stephanie returned along with Ann. (Ann had driven her back to the house, before she flew back to Chicago) The first thing she saw was her luggage which Eric left on the front step of the mansion. She tried to plead and reason with him, but it didn't matter. Eric was clearly fed up with Stephanie and her lies and manipulation over the years. To Eric, her association with Andy Johnson who eventually raped Brooke was the last straw. As far as he was concerned, it was clear that the marriage was over.
When she tried to return to work, Eric ordered that her office was to be cleared out. Eric making very clear that he means to abide by the terms of Nick's agreement. Not long after, Eric put his wedding ring on the desk, demanding a separation from Stephanie. She then moved into a hotel room, after collecting her belongings. Stephanie sank onto the bed and mourned the loss of her marriage.
In an upcoming fashion show it would be the first time that Eric would show off Donna, On the other hand, Stephanie from the start was adamant against the whole affair as she believed it was diminishing Eric's profile. Stephanie went to the show and had a confrontation with the entire Logan Family. She defiantly stated that she was going to be there, whether anyone else liked it or not.
She punctuated that statement by having Jackie thrown out in full view of the press; angering her and Nick; then conspiring with Thorne and Felicia to have Donna not appear next to Eric's arm (Thorne and Felicia are on their mother's side and don't want to see their parents marriage end). Thorne and Felicia locked Donna in the showstopper gown in a steam room, and when Eric called for her, Felicia pushed Stephanie onstage, infuriating Eric.
Not long after that Stephanie was shot by an unknown assailant. She underwent surgery and the bullet was successfully removed. There are a whole slew of suspects who wanted to see Stephanie dead. Mainly Donna Logan, who had the most to gain from her demise. Stephanie later realized that Donna didn't shoot her. However, she also had to contend with her younger sister, Pam, who had returned to L.A. She unleashed her absolute resentment towards Stephanie, who, in Pam's mind, was living it up in Los Angeles, while Pam was busy taking care of their cantankerous mother, Ann. Stephen Logan, Brooke's and Donna's father, was eventually arrested for the shooting; but he was released on probation. He later violated the protection order against him, when he brazenly visited the Forrester home, and was thus rearrested. However, it was later determined that Storm Logan had attempted to kill Stephanie. Despite Storm's confession, Stephen aims to confess to the shooting to protect his son.
Finding out Storm shot her, Stephanie was determined to turn him in until Brooke talked her out of it. The two made a deal. Storm would go free if Donna broke up with Eric. At first Donna felt forced into accepting the deal, but soon after told Eric the truth and together with him schemed to beat Stephanie at her own game. They continued their affair while Eric pretended to go back to Stephanie. However, Stephanie grew suspicious upon finding a bottle of Viagra that were being used. She located the place where Eric and Donna hid out together with the help of a private eye and Eric escaped out the window and was standing naked out on a ledge. The PI spotted him and snapped pictures which he immediately sold to the press. Next day Eric was horrified to see the paper and tried whisking Stephanie off to Tahiti so she wouldn't see the picture and find out the truth. However, there was a newspaper on the plane and Stephanie swore she´d send Storm to prison. But Katie talked Stephanie into letting it go. Stephanie has promised to let Eric go and grant him a divorce if he spends their anniversary with her and the family. This Eric did, and Stephanie, if anything, a woman of her word, kept her end of the bargain. Once the divorce is finalized, Eric and Donna married.
Stephanie's biggest ally in her fight for Eric is her own sister, Pam, who has been playing vicious pranks on Donna. However, Stephanie realized that it is time for her to move on and to let Eric go, and because of that, she even admonished Pam on what she was doing, telling her to stop the pranks on Donna and Eric; and let him live his life.
Recently, Stephanie shocked Eric and her family by announcing that she will leave Forrester Creations and has offered that Eric and Donna can marry in the house. As an added surprise, she offered Eric to buy out her half of the house and, while she hasn't decided on what her future plans would be, she believes that it is time for her to move on with her life; and has graciously allowed Eric to move on with his new life with Donna.
Stephanie and Eric signed their divorce papers in April 2008, with no fanfare; and with much goodwill. The situation with Katie Logan being accidentally shot and her current medical issues, along with the death of Storm Logan has put things into perspective and is sincerely concerned with their welfare.
Despite her hopes that Eric's bout of nervousness would make him not marry Donna, he went through with it, marrying her in May 2008. After giving Eric and Donna a wonderful and sincere toast, and telling her children to go and celebrate with their father, despite their being against his remarriage, Stephanie took a last look at the house she and Eric had lived in for many years, and as she saw Eric and Donna dancing in the living room, as she had done herself many years previous, she stepped into the waiting limo, whispering "Good bye, Eric, and be happy."
Recently, Stephanie decided to downsize and reevaluate her life, and has moved into the beach house in Malibu. She has started to show a much nicer side to herself, supporting and befriending Katie Logan and indeed defending Donna Logan to her children.
After Eric was poisoned, she vowed revenge against who had done it. At first, Stephanie thought that Donna and Owen had poisoned Eric; but her suspicions were allayed by some information that had been given by Ann. It had been discovered that Pamela hadn't taken her meds since June. It was discovered that Pamela had poisoned Eric by injecting poison in one of Eric's daily lemon bars which Pam always makes for him, just to give him a little problem with his heart so he and Donna could not have sex anymore and break up their marriage, but it went wrong and Eric suffers a heart attack which then caused him to get into a coma. Pam manages to get the blame on Donna, and was about to shoot Donna in the Forrester's Cabin in the woods, but when Donna tries to escape, they notice a bear outside the house. Pam hits Donna on her head with a shotgun, causing her to faint. When she wakes up, she is tied to a chair and Pam is emptying several bottles of honey on her. Her plan is to open the door and let the bear kill Donna. Everything went like she wanted to, until Owen (who stole a cop car to get to the cabin) came, and rescued her; and Stephanie and her family to try to catch Pamela. Stephanie and Eric have had a long history of marriages and divorces, but they both deeply love and respect each other as parents, business partners and friends.
Even though Eric is married to Donna she plans on winning him back by giving him his self-esteem back of reminding him of how he built up the company. This is how she won Eric's heart in the beginning when he couldn't have Beth. At this time Beth has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and in her sick mindset she had made it her goal to keep Stephanie from harming her daughters again like she had done so many times before. At time she also has a reverie of her and Eric once being together. Eric invites Stephen and Beth to stay to Stephanie's (Eric also has her staying with Donna his wife who Stephanie despises) horror. Stephanie tries to manhandle Beth to leave and stay away from Eric and upsets her so much that Beth falls into the pool and drowns. She's later discovered by Donna who seeks to press charges against Eric's former wife, her mother's former rival.
Donna has recently left Eric after he failed to agree to her demands of not working with Stephanie. Stephanie comforted Eric after hearing of his separation and the two kissed. Has the path now been cleared to re-union? It may be possible now that Eric & Donna are now divorced. Whether it will happen remains to be seen.
Besides wondering if she still has a chance with Eric, Stephanie is now worried & very upset about her sister Pam because of her new romance with Brooke's recently widowed father Stephen Logan. Brooke shares Stephanie's horror & dismay over this relationship.
Stephanie is also very angry because of Donna receiving a share of stock in Forrester Creations as part of her divorce settlement from Eric no thanks to Bill Spencer, Jr. Stephanie becomes even more angry when she realizes that Pam is involved in Bill's plan, which involves him getting Donna the stock & having her sell it to him so that he can take over Forrester Creations again.
Stephanie's granddaughter Steffy blackmailed Brooke (Hope's mother) and Oliver (Hope's boyfriend) about their unidentified mistaken sex session between each other. This threat caused Brooke to confess to Ridge, which led him to demand Steffy to create a positive tribute in honor of Brooke. Bill Spencer's assistant Justin Barber sabotages the tribute and revealed the accidental tryst. Hope berates her mother and doesn't want to have anything to do with her, regardless of whether it was a mistake or not. Stephanie encourages Hope in that hatred after Hope requests to stay with her. Brooke arrives in an attempt to win her daughter back in spite of Hope's wishes to stay away from her for a time. Stephanie instead confronts Brooke and slaps her twice - once for Bridget (Brooke slept with one husband of Bridget's only; Deacon Sharpe which was due to drunkenness) and once for Hope (whose boyfriend she accidentally slept with thinking it was Ridge since they were wearing the same clothes).
Stephanie fell out at Brooke's house after arriving there to rant and rave about her being a failure, pitiful and having no morals and how she'll never be allowed back into the company. As she is going into one of her tirades yelling at Brooke she starts to cough and become light-headed. Brooke is still aruging with her mother-in-law telling her, "I'm tired of the same old arguments!" Stephanie collapses and falls onto the floor. Brooke is immediately concerned but changes her facial appearance since Stephanie fell out the last time again when she barely touched her and claimed Brooke forcefully pushed her. Brooke tells her, "I'm not falling for it again! Stephanie!" She turns around and walks away as Stephanie says, "Honey, help me." Brooke ignores her. Later Brooke, comes back down the stairs as Stephanie asks her if she called 911 and Brooke tells her no. "She's fine. It would take a stake through your heart to kill you." Stephanie who is still lucid takes her cell phone out of her pocket and calls 911 and tells the ambulance driver Brooke pushed her down.
Brooke tells them she's faking it and she's a regular at the hospital, always claiming she's doing something to herself, which has proven to be false on these occasions. The ambulance driver confirms that Stephanie is a regular and they take her to the hospital. At the hospital, Brooke and Stephanie wait for the doctor to run some more tests after she spots something she's concerned about. Before the doctor entered Brooke, told Stephanie, "I know you're faking again. Just like you faked with your other heart attacks. Why you're going through all of this with the tubes is utter nonsense." However, after the doctor decided to run a second test, Brooke stayed in the hospital, even though Stephanie told her to go home. Surprised, Stephanie asks her why and she tells her, "Because you're one of the most remarkable women I've ever known." Stephanie says, "Oh, no. The doctor told you something. Didn't she? Is that why you're acting so nice." Brooke sighs and tells her, "No. It's because it's true and no, I haven't heard anything yet." The doctor comes in and tells Stephanie she's calling in a specialist. "Mrs. Forrester, I'm sorry. You have cancer."
Brooke is floored by the revelation and a few tears comes to her eyes as she tries to comprehend the doctor's statement as Stephanie's stoic expression contemplates the news as well.
Brooke tries to urge Stephanie to fight the lung cancer and urges her to tell her family about it before it's too late. Stephanie instead decides to rent a slide and have a good time with the family upsetting Brooke who goes into a crying jag about not wanting to loose her. And she's a fighter. She doesn't give up easily. Stephanie responds by calling Brooke a dingbat and tells her she's been cruel to Brooke from day one! So stop acting so nice. Brooke takes Stephanie's hands and tells her that regardless of what she thinks of her they're in this together to the end.
Stephanie sill refuses to fight the cancer so Brooke enlists the help of her nemesis and Stephanie's conspirator and friend Taylor to encourage her ex-mother-in-law to fight the cancer.
Stephanie and Brooke who have been enemies for years come together in a comical fashion to hide Stephanie's illness. Stephanie and Brooke go to an amusement park and ride a rollercoaster as Brooke yells and screams for dear life while Stephanie laughs hysterically. Brooke becomes more appalled as Stephanie gulfs down junk food along with a cotton candy treat and reprimands her for eating junk food when she's in her condition. Stephanie yells and screams at Brooke after a thief named Dayzee runs off with her scarf. Stephanie wants to go after her and Brooke stops her from doing it. As they arrive at the office because Ridge is going to announce Brooke coming back to the office after the "Oliver and Brooke" scandal they both stand outside the office trying to act as if nothing has happened. When Ridge announces to her Brooke is returning Stephanie replies, "Okay. Let's get back to business." Shocking everyone in her family to her response as Brooke smiles nervously.
Brooke tries to tell her husband Ridge about Stephanie's condition but he's so thrilled his wife and mother are finally getting along he wants her to keep the secret. So Brooke decides to tell Taylor her ex-rival and they cry and bond over Stephanie. Taylor then decides to tell Pam, Stephanie's sister.
Stephanie runs after the woman who stole her mother's scarf and discovered the woman was taking care of a friend's baby who was on drugs. Stephanie wonders what she has done with her life except make her family and Brooke miserable. She talks the woman into coming with her home so she can make sure the baby is doing better health wise. Brooke finds her and Stephanie apologizes to her for making her life and living hell and they both tell each other they love each other. However, it's still to be seen whether or not this is a true transformation since Stephanie has done the same before and reverted back towards her hatred for Brooke. Stephanie decides to have the surgery after the homeless woman talks about the homeless who have no hope or reason to live always striving to do just that. After Stephanie's surgery, she decides to help the homeless on occasion. Stephanie is also very determined to beat her cancer after Eric and the rest of her family gives her the love and support she needs as she goes through what is to be a very trying ordeal even for someone as strong and as tough as Stephanie.
As of November 2011, Stephanie is said to be all clear of a relapse, and is in healthy condition.
Stephanie bullies her grandson Thomas to lie and say his stepmother and him had sex. This news leads Brooke to encourage Ridge to marry Taylor who, in Stephanie's opinion, is the better woman. Ridge proposes and Taylor happily accepts. Stephanie comes over and tells Brooke and feigns concern for her after Brooke breaks down into tears and Stephanie hugs her.
On July 8, 2011 just as Stephanie is about to rejoice in seeing Ridge and Taylor marry, she puts a stop to the wedding and admits to lying about what happened between him and Brooke on the island. She admits that nothing happened and that she bribed Thomas to lie. Ridge and Taylor are both stunned and angry, and, much to Stephanie's dismay, the wedding is called off. Ridge goes back to Brooke while Taylor confronts Stephanie about the part she played in Thomas' lie.
