This article contains opinion polling by U.S. state for the 2012 Republican Party presidential primaries.
As of January 2012, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney are the only active candidates who have led polls in multiple states. They are also the only candidates to reach at least 20 percent in polls in multiple states. Before announcing that they would not run, Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin were also leading polls in multiple states with numbers above 20 percent. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain were both able to lead polls in multiple states earlier in the race, but Cain suspended his campaign on December 3 after multiple allegations of sexual impropriety[1] and Bachmann dropped out on January 4, one day after her poor showing in the Iowa caucuses, in which she came in sixth place and received just 5 percent of the vote.[2]
Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Jeb Bush of Florida, Chris Christie of New Jersey, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, and John Thune of South Dakota all succeeded in leading polls in their home states at some point in 2011, although only Pawlenty actually launched a campaign. Pawlenty exited the race on August 14, one day finishing third in Iowa's Ames Straw Poll, citing a lack of campaign funds.[3][4]

Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul will appear on the ballot. Other candidates failed to submit the necessary 10,000 signatures (including at least 400 from each of the state's 11 congressional districts) required to get on the ballot by the December 22 deadline.[5]
On December 27, Rick Perry filed a lawsuit - joined later by Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum - in the federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Richmond that challenges provisions that determine who can appear on the primary ballot. Perry and the other candidates argue that the chairman of the Virginia Republican Party and members of State Board of Elections violated their rights by enforcing state requirements as to the number of signatures, the qualifications for signers, and the requirement that all petition circulators be "an eligible or registered qualified voter in Virginia." Perry and the other litigants argue that these restrictions "impose a severe burden" on their freedoms of speech and association under the First and Fourteenth Amendment.[6][7][8]
The case is Perry v. Judd. U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney, Jr. ruled on December 29 that he would not issue an injunction to stop the printing of ballots before a scheduled hearing on January 13.[9] The Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli, representing the state, made a motion to dismiss the case because of a lack of standing.[10]
