Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications (Abbreviation: SPbSUT) (Russian: Санкт-Петербургский государственный университет телекоммуникаций) is one of the major research and educational centers of Russia as well as a leading technical university located in Saint Petersburg. It has been named after Professor Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bonch-Bruevich.
SPbSUT is a founding member of the Association of European Universities and Companies of Informatics and Computer Electronics (EUNICE).

Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications was established in 1930 under the name of Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute. Its history is associated closely with the development of Russian and world science in the Communication area and great scientific and technical base.
From 1931 to 1940 the outstanding Russian scientist in radio mechanics and corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bonch-Bruevich was at the head of the chair of theoretical radio engineering in Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute. He was doctor of technical sciences, one of the originators of Spark Discharge Theory as well as Theory of Radio wave Transmission in the Upper Atmosphere, and creator of first electronic tubes, radio-telephone transmitter, radio-telephone tube stations, etc.
In honor of Professor Bonch-Bruevich's scientific contributions and in accordance with the USSR Council of People's Commissars' Decree of 8 June 1940, Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute was renamed to Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute of Communications (LEIC) named after Bonch-Bruevich.
In 1993 SpbSUT was reconstituted and gained the new status Saint Peterburg State University of Telecommunication named after Bonch-Bruevich by the order of Ministry of Communication of Russian Federation. New chairs were created: digital processing of signals, communication networks, information safety of telecommunication systems, biomedical technology, information-managing systems, global information technologies, global info-communication networks and systems.
Since 2006 by the order of the Ministry for Communications and Telecommunications of the Russian Federation, SPbSUT has been working out and developing the concept of Information and Technological park (IT-park) , that is created on the basis of the university. This is the first project of such kind in Russia, which will enhance the level of the educational process due to the new high tech material and technical base. The students will have the opportunity to participate directly in the accomplishment of high tech projects of international level which the IT Park will launch.
Today, the university is the region's biggest training and scientific complex specialized in information technologies and communications.
Since 1993, Saint-Petersburg State University of Telecommunications has been a founding member of the Association of European Universities and Companies of Informatics and Computer Electronics (EUNICE), which unites the leading Universities of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland.
Joint laboratories and educational centers for Communication specialists' preparation have been created together with such well known foreign firms as SIEMENS, Nokia, Alkatel, AT&T, FINNET, NEC and Teletechno OY; students have got the opportunity to pass their practical training and discover the latest communication technologies there.
Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunication is a member of Finish-Russian Innovation University (FRIU) that aims at establishing a constant and dynamic structure for the state-of-the-art research and education by combining technology, business studies and design.
Besides, SPbSUT has multi-national programmes and initiatives with institutions worldwide. Some examples of key partners include University of Helsinki, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Munich Technical University, Ecole d'Ingenieurs des Technologies de l'Information et du Management, Information and Communication University, etc.
