St. Paul's Hospital, Ethiopia

The St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College is the second biggest hospital in Ethiopia.[1]

History

The Hospital was built by Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1969 with the help of the German Evangelical Church. It aimed to serve the poor.

A medical college was formed in 2007.

Capacity

The hospital has 300 beds sees an annual average of 100,000. It has a catchment population of more than 5 million.

The hospital has 800 clinical and non-clinical staff

Medical School

A Medical School was opened in 2007 - which is the new Millennium era of Ethiopia, (which is 7 years behind the Gregorian calendar).

The school was established by the federal ministry of health of Ethiopia as Professor Gordon Williams of the Department of Urology at the Hammersmith Hospital in London its first dean who is currently the medical director of Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa.

The enrollment is 40% female. There are links with Addis Ababa, Jimma, Tulane and Michigan universities as well as Open University. The current provost is Dr. Mesfin Araya.
