SpringSource is a division of VMware that provides a suite of software products for the enterprise Java application life cycle of build, run, and manage. SpringSource works on improving Spring, a programming model for enterprise Java applications. SpringSource also employs multiple members of the Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTP Server, Hyperic, Groovy and Grails open source communities.
SpringSource provides support for the open source application frameworks Spring and Grails which run on the Java Virtual Machine. It also employs committers from those as well as other open source projects and is a participant in the Java Community Process.
The Spring Framework is a framework in the Java web development industry, while Grails is a web application framework for the Groovy programming language.
SpringSource provides training for the Spring framework, Apache, Tomcat, tc Server and Groovy/Grails through its educational services unit, SpringSource, university and its certified partner SpringPeople.
SpringSource has made a number of acquisitions including Covalent, G2One, Cloud Foundry, Hyperic, RabbitMQ and Gemstone. Since the acquisition of SpringSource by VMware in August 2009, the company has announced strategic partnership and collaboration efforts with Salesforce.com and Google.
SpringSource was purchased for $420m by VMware in August 2009, and is now a division of VMware.
