Sound Novel Tsukūru (サウンドノベルツクール Saundo Noberu Tsukūru , "Sound Novel Maker")[3] is a Super Famicom graphic novel video game where players can either read or create interactive fiction on their own console systems. The Japanese name, Tsukūru is a pun mixing the Japanese word tsukuru (作る), which means "make" or "create", with tsūru (ツール), the Japanese transcription of the English word "tool".
Stories can be saved either on a battery or through the use of removable 8-megabyte memory packs that are used with the Satellaview subsystem. There is a sequel to this game called Sound Novel Tsukūru 2 for the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn; it was released on September 25, 1997 exclusively in Japan.[4]
Sound Novel Tsukūru was released exclusively in Japan and the game functions in Japanese (although limited amounts of English are possible). Sounds can be added in places where they fit appropriately in the user's created story line. The game comes with a previously created graphic novel about exploring an old house. Due to the limitations in the game's engine, it can only show shadows of non-player characters that the player meets on his journey. Settings can range from a modern day train to a rural house and even wilderness can be included in various stages of wildness.
