Soumitra Dutta is an author and Professor of Business and Technology.
Professor Dutta is Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Business and Technology and Dean of External Relations at INSEAD.[1] He is also faculty director of elab@INSEAD. Elab’s written mission statement is to “build a center of excellence in teaching and research in the digital economy in collaboration with leading international organizations such as Morgan Stanley, SAP, Cisco and Intel".[2] Professor Dutta obtained his Ph.D. in computer science and his M.Sc. in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley.

Professor Dutta researches technology strategy and innovation at both the corporate and national policy levels and explores the general areas of business innovation and the internet. His particular area of interest, which is pursued through his work with the eLab project, is in national IT strategies and the technological competitiveness of nations.
Professor Dutta has authored and co-authored several books, including the most recent “Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom: How Online Social Networking Will Transform Your Life, Work and World” (Fraser & Dutta 2008) investigating the implications of social network services for the enterprise which he co-authored with Matthew Fraser. Another of his recent books was more centered on leadership development, titled “Innovating at the Top: How Global CEOs Drive Innovation for Growth and Profit” (Berger et al. 2008) which was co-authored with Roland Berger, Geoffrey Samuels and Tobias Raffel.
In addition, every year Dutta co-authors “The Global Information Technology Report” produced by the World Economic Forum, which remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of Information and communication technologies (ICT) on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.[3]
In May 2009, Dr. Dutta participated in the first Connected Speakers seminar, hosted by the Supreme Council for Information & Communication Technology ictQATAR. Drawing from his book "Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom", Dr. Dutta addressed the Web 2.0 revolution and how social networking is changing the way people communicate both personally and professionally.
Professor Dutta is actively involved in policy development at national and European levels. He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee for ICT for the Government of Qatar[4] and has advised other national governments on ICT policy issues. He is the Chairman of the European Commission's Europe Innova[5] panel on Innovation in the ICT sector and a member of the Steering Committee of eBSN,[6] the European Commission's eBusiness Network initiative for SMEs.
