Sornetan

Sornetan is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

Geography

Sornetan has an area of 5.7 km2 (2.2 sq mi). Of this area, 47% is used for agricultural purposes, while 50.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.4%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

Demographics

Sornetan has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 126.[1] As of 2007, 3.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -7.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (87.6%), with German being second most common ( 9.7%) and Spanish being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 34.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (27.9%), the Green Party (15.7%) and the FDP (12.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 29.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 7.1%. In Sornetan about 81.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Sornetan has an unemployment rate of 0.48%. As of 2005, there were 26 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 9 businesses involved in this sector. 21 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 3 businesses in this sector. 19 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 2 businesses in this sector.[3]
