A Smoggie or Smoggy is a pejorative name given to people from the Teesside area in north east England. The term originates from outside the community from people who saw that local heavy industry and chemical plants produced smog-like emissions. The name is not generally accepted by people to whom it is given, but is often used in jest and humorous self-deprecation.[1] The chemical sector in Teesside has contributed a value calculated in billions to the UK and European economy throughout the 20th Century and continues to contribute economcally in the 21st Century.
