Six Mile is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the GreenvilleMauldinEasley Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Six Mile, named after Six Mile Mountain, was originally known as Hurricane Township.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it is land and 0.55% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 553 people, 200 households, and 154 families residing in the town. The population density was 304.4 people per square mile (117.3/km²). There were 223 housing units at an average density of 122.7 per square mile (47.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.93% White, 1.99% African American, 0.72% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.

There were 200 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.0% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $48,571, and the median income for a family was $51,667. Males had a median income of $39,792 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,260. About 5.5% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
