Sitka Naval Operating Base and U.S. Army Coastal Defenses in Sitka, Alaska[2] was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Alternative or associated names are Sitka, the Causeway, and Mt. Edgecumbe School.
Formally commissioned as Sitka Naval Air Station in October 1939,[2] this facility was redesignated as the Naval Operating Base in July 1942. During the early months of World War II, it was among the few installations prepared to guard the North Pacific against enemy incursion. Airplanes stationed at the base patrolled the southeast Alaskan waters, tracking reported submarines and watching for other enemy activity.
Located on Baranof Island, Sitka[2] (or Japonski Island), it was declared a National Historic Landmark on August 11, 1986.[3][4]
