Singrauli (Hindi: सिंगरौली) is a town in Singrauli district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The area in the eastern part of the state of MP and the adjoining southern part of Sonbhadra district in the state of UP is collectively known as Singrauli. Singrauli is emerging as India’s Energy capital, the place earlier known as Shringavali, named after the sage Shringi, was once upon a time covered with dense and unnavigable forests and inhabited by wild animals. The place was considered so treacherous that it was used by the Kings of Rewa State, who ruled the area till 1947, as an open air prison for detaining errant civilians and officers.
Just two generations ago, small holders were tending their parcels of land here, and the original inhabitants were gathering honey and herbs in the forest. In the late fifties, a large scale dam banked up the water of the River Rihand. The dam known as Govind Vallabh Pant Sagar, was inaugurated by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1962. Later, rich coal deposits spread over an area of 2200 km² in the state of M.P. (eastern part of Sidhi District) and U.P. (southern part of Sonebhadra District) were discovered close to the artificial lake that could be used to generate electricity
As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Singrauli had a population of 185,580. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Singrauli has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 65%. The connectivity is not so good from Singrauli district. The nearest city to Singrauli is Varanasi 208 km by road, nearest railway junction is Singrauli junction (the one platform junction between Katni-Chopan line), it is 768 km from Bhopal. The nearest airport is at Varanasi and one at Mayurpur owned by Hindalco. Private transport facilities are available in this area and it is directly connected with Chattishgarh (Ambikapur), Maharashtra (Nagpur) and UttarPradesh (Varanasi) by road. Singrauli is approximately 50 km from Renukoot which train connectivity with Delhi, Ranchi, Tatanagar, Patna and Calcutta.
All major companies operating at Singrauli are giants of Indian energy industry. The operations of companies include mining of coal to power generation. In recent past several private companies too have joined the league of companies operating at Singrauli. It is expected that by 2017 Singrauli alone would feed 35,000 MW of electrical power to the grid.

But the road connectivity to Sasan is bad due to bad maintenance of road. Mobile connectivity is also very much congested here due to junction of UP, MP and Chattisgarh. Rail department planning to expand their network here.
All these Industrial developments have only been possible because Mother earth has blessed this part of the land with mineable reserves of Coal. Northern Coalfields Limited, the PSU coal major and the highest profit making subsidiary of Coal giant “Coal India Ltd” is the only feeder to these power, chemical and cement plants located within the vicinity of Singrauli Industrial Zone. With many billion tones of coal being mined for the last 35-40 yrs, it still sits on a geographical reserve of more raw material area.
With Singrauli being scattered in M.P and U.P there is no real life development with the common people. The entire credits on developments in this zone directly goes to the host of Corporate honchos Viz; NCL Singrauli, NTPC, Hindalco Industries. The real development is still to be done, with investment by energy and mining companies worth more than INR 500 Billion coming up in this area and airport by Reliance Singrauli will see a facelift in 10 to 15 years. Although it is a mineral reached area the lifestyle is not standard still now. Specially infrastructure not upto the level of other developed states of India, like Gujarat,Maharashtra.
