SSHL was founded by Manfred Björkquist and Harry Cullberg. The first buildings of what eventually became SSHL were constructed in 1900-1933. Until 1980 Sigtuna housed two schools, Sigtunaskolan (SS) and Sigtunastiftelsens Humanistiska Läroverket (SHL), located on hills on either side of town. In 1980 the schools were consolidated at the SHL site on the western side of town.
The school offers the MYP program from grades 7-9. The high school offers both Swedish and English programs. Students of the Swedish program focus either on humanities or science and mathematics. The English-speaking programs includes the IB program International Baccalaureate and the Business and Management Programme (the Swedish ”Ekonomiprogram” taught in English).
The school has some 550 to 600 students. Day students make up the majority of the population in middle school, while the reverse is true for grades 10 to 12, the equivalent of high school. Overall, 2/3 of students are boarding students. There are five homes for boys and five homes for girls, where students aged 13-19 live.
