The song was written by Emily Haines and produced by John O'Mahony. The song was written at Bear Creek Studios outside of Seattle like most of the songs on Fantasies. It also was one of the songs to go through Metric's "campfire test" in which they strip down the song to just a piano and acoustic guitar with vocals.
The music video for Sick Muse was filmed during a photo shoot with Justin Broadbent and Michael Leach. It happened spontaneously; here's what Metric had to say about it:
When Fantasies was released, we realized pretty quickly that "Sick Muse" was getting a lot of attention in the UK. In the midst of a heavy schedule of touring and press engagements, we didn't know how we were going to manage to find the time to shoot another video! In the end, it happened spontaneously during a photo shoot with a couple of friends in Toronto. We went into the shoot with nothing but a wardrobe, a white wall and some party supplies, but we pulled it off! We had fun and we hope it shows!
