SiBEAM Inc., now a subsidiary of Silicon Image, was a fabless semiconductor company and a developer of high-speed wireless communication platforms. The company was among the leading innovators of millimeter wave (mmWave) solutions and developer of high-speed wireless communications technology. The company was based in Sunnyvale and San Diego, California.
The company was founded in 2004 by a team of researchers in wireless communications from the University of California, Berkeley and strategic backers including Panasonic, Samsung, Cisco Systems, and Best Buy.[1][2][3][4] The company has raised over $112 million of venture capital financing from U.S. Venture Partners, New Enterprise Associates, Foundation Capital, and Lux Capital in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]
SiBEAM was developing millimeter wave technologies to meet the demand for high-bandwidth services. A founding member of the WirelessHD Consortium, SiBEAM’s first products are based on the WirelessHD 1.0 specification. The company's Omnilink60-based WirelessHD chipsets are being used for end-to-end wireless high-definition digital video display, without compression or buffering.
SiBEAM was noted by several publications as one of the promising startup companies in its industry.[12][13]
SiBEAM was acquired by Silicon Image in April 2011 for $25.5 million in cash and Silicon Image stock.[14][15]
