Demographics

The 65,000-member communities are predominantly middle-class with a high percentage of college graduates and professional people. The district's student population is 6.8% African-American, 17.6% Asian, 1.3% Native American, 5.4% Hispanic, and 68.9% Caucasian.

Parental involvement is high with the Parent Teacher Association one of the most active in the state. The district encourages parent participation at all levels.

Shoreline has had strong support with bonds from the community. Voters strongly supported it in 1984, 1988, 1994, and every year for the past three. Additionally, a new bond was passed in 2006 that awards millions of dollars for a Laptop-technology integration program at the high, middle and elementary school level (for Echo Lake grades 4, 5, and 6). High school students were given an Apple MacBook for an insurance of $70. All other students were given an Apple iBook G4 for $60 Insurance.

Laptop Program

The Shoreline School District began this program on a test basis at Echo Lake elementary and decided to continue it in the middle and high schools.

Blocking: some Shoreline School District computers have been subject to a web filtering software called Safe Eyes. This program has caused some problems on many of the computers and made for annoyances with seemingly random unnecessary filtering. There have also been many problems with the application blocking software which will at some times block applications like Safari and Textedit.
