The Shergill Jatt / Jat Clan is from Punjab, India. Many Shergills also use the surname Gill as they have descended from Gill clan of Jats. Shergill was one of the eight sons of Gillpal who was the founder of Gill surname.

Gill and Shergill has become a renowned surname throughout South Asia and the Punjab. Gills are currently considered one of the main aristocratic Jat clans of the Jat gotra system. It is historically noted that Shergill was born to a Jat Rani of Ragho Vanshi (family) Raja Pithipal, who ruled Ferozepore around 12-13 centuries. One of his descenant Moga came to be known as Moga Btaalia (42). Reason being that his descent had established 42 villages around the city of Moga.

The name name Gil is explained by a story to the effect that the Raja had no children by his Rajputni wives, and therefore married a Jat woman. She bore a son, but the other wives, moved by jealousy, exposed it in a marshy spot in the jungle. The infant was accidentally found by the King's minister and called Gill, from the place where he was found, "gil" meaning moisture.

Another version is given by Sir Lepal Griffin in his book,"Punjab Chiefs" (page 352) that "the child son of Gil was found being licked and fondled by a tiger ("sher"), whence he received the name of the Sher Gill. Notable Shergills

The Rulers/Maharajas of the Nishanwalia Misl, Sukha Singh and Mehar Singh were Shergills. The Majithia Rulers/Maharajas of Majha were also Shergills. World famous painter Amrita Sher-Gil, who was the daughter of Sikh Aristocrat Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia, also belonged to Shergill Jats. Many have also emigrated to various countries.

The descendants of Shergill, one of the eight sons of the Great Gillpal, settled in the Zira area located in Malwa and gave rise to the elite Shergill (i.e. Singh Gill) Jat clan of the Punjab. Another notable Shergill is Balkar Shergill, who is a descendent of Bhagat Singh.

Distribution

There are two villages of Shergills in district Patiala (i.e pind Behal and Majaal-Khurd). Behal village is located on the Patiala-Pehowa road and Majaal-Khurd is on the west of Behal. Sardar Charanjit Singh Shergill (1905-1997) of the Behal village, south of Patialla, was a prominent figure in the area. Shergills are also found in nearby Mehmudpur and Khansian villages.

There are eight villages near Banga in District Nawanshahr where Shergills reside. These are Raipur Dabba, Mukandpur, Jagatpur [Jhingran], Dyalpur, Bahua and Chak Bilgan etc.

There are some villages of Shergills in Nurpur Bedi Block in Ropar i.e. Abiana, Leharian, Rampur Bela, Bhatton, Bains,Aaulakh & many more. In Amritsar district, the famous village [Baserke Gillan] is also the birthplace of the third Guru of Sikhs, Guru Amar Das Ji.

In Sangrur district of Punjab there are three famous villages of Shergills (i.e. Jamsher,Rajomajra and Moranwali). Jallandhar/Nawan Shehar district is Langeri.
