The Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila is a planned luxury mixed-used development featuring a 5-star hotel, hotel residences and upscale condominiums, located at the Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, Philippines. The new hotel will complement the company’s four existing hotel properties in the Philippines and the Shangri-La Resort and Spa, Boracay, which opened last April 2009. [5] [6]

At 250m tall, upon completion, it will become one of the tallest skyscrapers in the Philippines. As of May 2011, excavation works had been completed and substructure works were ongoing.

Location

The mixed-use hotel, residential and retail tower will be located along Fifth Avenue and 30th, within the new, fast-developing Taguig business district. A 30-minute drive from the international airport, the hotel will also be close to the Manila Golf and Polo Club, and 10 minutes from Makati district, the capital’s financial, cultural and entertainment hub with first-class shopping malls.[6]

Design

Shangri-La has named US-based Handel Architects as design architect and Hirsch Bedner Associates will undertake the interior design for hotel guestrooms, hotel residences and the hotel public areas. The tower will present a contemporary and elegant design maximizing views all around.[6]

The Hotel

Guestrooms will start at 48 square meters (516 square feet) for a standard room. The Horizon Club, Shangri-La’s exclusive retreat for discerning travelers, will offer a host of special amenities and privileges, including a lounge for daily breakfast and cocktails, meeting rooms, and express check-in and check-out services.

Dining and entertainment options will include an all-day café, deli café, specialty restaurant, Chinese restaurant, lobby lounge, poolside bar and barbecue, and an entertainment and bar area that will occupy two levels and have its own direct street access.

An extensive health club, swimming pools and tennis courts will provide a choice of recreational activities.

The hotel will feature over 4,600 square meters (49,519 square feet) of meeting and banqueting facilities including a grand ballroom, junior ballroom, 11 function rooms, boardroom, business center, individual teleconferencing room and a 350-square-meter (1,148-square-foot) high-end outdoor event area.[3] [6] Sir Robert Kuok, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts chairman, also announced during the groundbreaking ceremonies that the hotel shall house what will become Manila’s largest ballroom with a floor area of 1,800 square meters [4].

The structural design is being performed by DeSimone Consulting Engineers (www.de-simone.com.) The design is being completed using state-of-the-art earthquake engineering design philosophy called Performance Based Design (PBD).
