Shamil Hajiyev

Shamil Hajiyev (also known as Almaz Sharipov) (born 1971) is a Russian citizen who was held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba.[1] Hajiyev is a muslim from Bashkortostan. Camp authorities did not realize Sharipov was an alias, at first.

Hajiyev served as a detective in Tatarstan and a law student at Uta State University, until his disappearance in 1999.[1]

Hajiyev, and six other Russian Guantanamo detainees, were repatriated to Russia, were they faced charges of illegal border crossing, being members of a criminal group and being a mercenary in an armed conflict. [2]
