Shahjahanpur (Hinglish:शaहjaहाaanपuर; Urdu: شاه ‌جہاں پور) is a municipal board, town and district headquarters of Shahjahanpur District in Uttar Pradesh, India.

History

During the reign of Shahjahan, Mughal forces demolished the city of Kant. After the battle, Shahjahan gifted 14 villages to two Sipehsalars (Commanding Generals, सिपहसालार, سپحسالار), Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan and gave them permission to construct fortresses. Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan founded Shahjahanpur on the ruins of Kant. The Mughals established the Kotwali district in the city and built the first Mosque in the town, at Moti Chok. They developed a fort in the nearby village of Nainar Khera, situated on the Garrah river as well as established 52 mohallas named after 52 qabilas (tribes) of Pathans in Afghanistan. Even today, a few of the local mohallas bear the names of these tribes. The nearest prominent Rajput province is Powayan (Gaur Fortress of Powayan) established by Raja Udai Singh in 1705 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Shahjahanpur & "PARAUR" estate eastablished by THAKUR NARAYAN SINGH BAHADUR Rao, Raja. he Received the title of Raja on June 22, 1897.At present Shri Ajay singh is known as "RAJA PARAUR". THE "PARAUR" is situated at SHAHJAHANPUR-BADAUN border under jalalabad tehsil.

The city came into the spotlight during the Indian struggle for freedom. Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Thakur Roshan Singh and Ashfaqulla Khan brought Shahjahanpur fame through their heroic contribution to the independence movement. Thereafter Shahjahanpur also became known as Shaheedon Ki Nagri or "Town of Martyrs."

Raja Ajay Kumar Singh was married to Rani Seema Singh. Raja A.K.Singh's only daughter Raj Kumari Pratibha Singh (Vidhi) who is married to Rajkunwar Ashish Kumar Singh of Malasa son of Thakur Indra Bhusan Singh (Kanpur Dehat), Her Son's Name is Yuvraj Singh, Raj Kunwar of Malasa-Parour.

Transport

Shahjahanpur district is on National Highway No. 24, which connects New Delhi and the state capital, Lucknow. Twenty-four hour conveyance is available for New Delhi and Lucknow. Shahjahanpur Railway Station is on the main-line Jammu Tawi-Howrah rail route. It is an important station between Bareilly and Lucknow. Almost each and every train stops on this station. There are a number of trains that pass through Shahjahanpur. The nearest airport is in Amausi (Lucknow), at a distance of 180 km. Shahjahanpur is 335 km from New Delhi.

The Prasad of Shahjahanpur

The Prasad family is the most noted family of Shahjahanpur. As Zamindars of Shahjahanpur and its environs since the 19th century, they have representated the area in national politics for many years.

Sir Jwala Prasad was one of the first Indians to join the Imperial Civil Service. He was married to Purnima Devi, also known as Sudakshina Devi (1884-), who was the youngest child of noted Brahmo Hemendranath Tagore, and niece of Rabindranath Tagore.

Kunwar Jyoti Prasad, was the only child of Sir Jwala Prasada and Purnima Devi. He was a leading zamindar and social reformist, and a member of the state legislative council. He was married to Rajkumari Pamela Devi of Kapurthala State and they had three children.

Kunwar Jitendra Prasad (1938–2001).(Elder son of Kunwar Jyori Prasada) Was a Congress politician and a member of the 5th, 7th, 8th, 13th Lok Sabha. He was also Vice President of the Congress Party. Married to Kunwarani Kanta Prasada.

Kunwar Jitin Prasad (Son of Jitendra Prasad & Kunwarani Kanta Prasada), Jitin Prasada (born 29 November 1973) is an Indian politician from Indian National Congress. At present he is the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways. He is representing Dhaurahra (Lok Sabha constituency) of district Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh in 15th Lok Sabha where he won by 1,84,509 votes.

Early life

Born in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh to Jitendra Prasad, former Vice President of the Indian National Congress and Political Advisor to the Prime Ministers, Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and P V Narasimha Rao in 1994. His mother, Kanta Prasada, hails from Himachal Pradesh and runs an NGO `SRIJAN` Jitendra Prasada Foundation towards the cause of women, youth, farmers and the underprivileged. His sister, Janhavi Prasada, is a documentary filmmaker and peace educator.

He studied at The Doon School, Dehradun and did his B.Com.(Hons) from the prestigious Sri Ram College of Commerece, Delhi University and completed his MBA from IMI, New Delhi.

Business

Food Processing like Paper Mills, Flour Mills, Rice Mills And Sugar Mills are the main industries in this area. In past, carpet weaving used to be one of the main businesses.

Prominent Government factory Ordnance Clothing factory is there which is supplying clothes to Indian Army. Shahjahanpur is now developing as an industrial area. There are 3 sugar mills, Chemical & Fertilizer plants,paper mill, McDowell's plant and IOC's filling stations etc. Anil Ambani led Reliance Power has established a 2x300 MW Thermal Power station on Shahjahanpur Hardoi Road at Rosa. Additional 2x300 MW units are at advanced stage of construction. Shahjahanpur also has a large number of Brick Kilns as well.

Real estate sector is also developing well in the city. Two major colonies namely South City and Pratap Enclave have brought critical fame to the city.Another emerging colony is The Garden Estate.
