Serbia and Montenegro Cup

The Serbia and Montenegro Cup is a defunct cup tournament. The competition was formed in 2003 after FR Yugoslavia had changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro on February 4, 2003. The format from this tournament did not change at all from that of the Yugoslav Cup the only difference was the name change. This cup tournament lasted for four seasons up until the dissolution of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro. The tournament was dominated by Serbian clubs with no Montenegrin sides reaching the final. Belgrade giants Red Star were easily the most successful club reaching the final all four years winning twice and losing in the final the other two seasons. Surprisingly, Red Star's cross-town rival Partizan did not appear in a single final.

Successors to the Cup

After Montenegro had gained its independence from Serbia in 2006 both football associations got to work on organizing a new tournament. The Football Association of Serbia formed a deal with Carlsberg affiliate Lav Pivo and quickly formed the Lav Kup Srbije. Montenegro's FA had much more trouble organizing their cup tournament as most of the organizers of the Serbia and Montenegro cup where in Serbia and they directly inherited the rights to the former association as well as cup tournament. However, after a long and difficult struggle the Montenegrin Cup was finally formed.
