Sehore is a city and a municipality in Sehore district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the district headquarters of Sehore District and is located on the Bhopal-Indore highway, 37 km away from Bhopal.

Sehore's name

Some inscriptions on rocks discovered in the vicinity of modern Sehore state its name as Sidhapur and Sidrapur. On the other hand, some etymologists believe that Sehore derives its name from Sher, a word in Hindi, which means a lion, and a large number of lions were found in the area in earlier times. The location of Sehore in the foothills of the Vindhyachal mountains lends credence to this belief.This city is famous for the ancient ganesh mandir.

Geography

Sehore is 37 km away from the state capital of Bhopal towards south-west and on Bhopal-Indore highway. Its height from the sea level is 1500 ft. to 2000 ft. Sehore is situated on the Western Railway line from Bhopal to Ratlam. Sehore is surrounded by six districts: Bhopal, Raisen, Hoshangabad, Dewas, Shajapur and Rajgarh. Sehore District extends between the parallels of Latitude 22'31 to 23'40 North and between the meridians of Longitude 76'22 and 78'08 East. Sehore is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 502 metres (1646 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Sehore had a population of 90,930. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Sehore has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 61%. In Sehore, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
