Sean Porteous began playing music at St. Augustine's High School, 2000 in Edinburgh and formed pop rock band One Way with fellow students Alex Gemmell, Paul Bannon and Kevin Steele. After a stint at Edinburgh music venue Liquid Rooms they were asked to play The Ross Bandstand in the centre of Edinburgh at Princes Street Gardens. After high school the band split up and Porteous began to write more music and opened acoustically for bands he knew or had played with before.
In November 2002, Porteous nearly lost his life to disease of Meningococcemia, a fatal type of Meningitis. Although the disease has a high fatality rate of nearly 50%, Porteous survived. He says this experience inspired him to change who he was as a person and treat everything as a bonus. During his time in hospital he wrote many songs for 'Near Death Experiment' including a song called 'Unknown Illness'. Porteous says "Without getting too deep... the album is called Near Death Experiment because, apart from calling this whole thing an experience, I see it as somewhat of an experiment. An experiment on me from a higher power, to make me a better person, to treat life the way it should be and to not take things for granted. Buying a nice car or a big house can be fun, but they're not real. They don't have a pulse. We sometimes forget these things."
A while later he was asked to join local indie act Seneka as second guitarist. He was hired by the drummer at the time, his former classmate and ex-drummer for One Way, Paul Bannon. He played with them until 2005 and by mutual agreement he left to continue his acoustic work along with producing.[3]
In 2004 he worked heavily with singer and friend Maria Doherty and later that summer she released her debut album 'Maria' through Porteous' label Near Def Records. The pair are working on a follow-up to her debut album right now.[4]
Cielo Drive was born after a meeting with a drummer called Francis Morgan and they recruited Chris Buckley the next day. They began to play as a band, the songs Porteous had been writing for 4 years prior.[5]
The released their debut album 'Goodbye To Yesterday' through Near Def Records in Summer 2008 and are working on a follow-up to it. Two tracks have been leaked from it, and they are titled 'Making Noise Without A Sound' and 'Past Tense'.
In 2006 he auditioned as a guitarist for Limp Bizkit after both Wes Borland and Mike Smith left the band due to creative differences. Lead singer Fred Durst would later say he would be auditioning guitarists through the internet and Myspace. Although no guitarist was ever selected by Durst, he became very popular within the Limp Bizkit camp along with other try out Morley Tatro.
Porteous plays PRS Guitars.
Porteous has confirmed he has started writing the follow-up to Cielo Drive's debut record. "I'm all geared up for the summer in every aspect. Expect an album that has moved on, and is possibly more positive. But one that still hasn't forgotton. I never forget"
Porteous and Cielo Drive have been on and off for over a year but 2009 looks like the year for that to change.
