Scott Bourne spends much of his time teaching about photographic equipment, giving career advice, digital camera technologies and software tools for photographers.
Bourne has conducted classes, workshops, tours and seminars for many photographic organizations.[1]
Bourne is an active host to his own podcast, 'Photofocus'. [2] He is also a former contributor to 'This Week In Photography', 'MacBreak Weekly', and 'Gear Media Tech'.[3]
The website Peta Pixel published a 1984 Infoweek article stating that "Alfred Scott Bourne, of Indianapolis, was arrested August 6 on a Colorado theft warrant, after Cheyenne police received a tip from Denver FBI agents. Bourne was also wanted for a February 1982 parole violation. After his arrest, police discovered warrants for Bourne from nearly every Western state. Cheyenne police say that Bourne learned computer programming while serving time in an Idaho state prison." [4] [5]
Bourne’s company, Bourne Media Group, LLC, was previously registered in Washington State where corporate records identify Scott and Jana Bourne as “governing persons,” located at a Gig Harbor, Washington address;[6][7] in 2003 a bankruptcy petition was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Washington listing Alfred Scott and Jana Bourne, at the same Gig Harbor address, as debtors.[8] The bankruptcy petition indicates that the debtors also operated businesses under the names “Earth Portrait Galleries,” “Scott Bourne Companies,” and “Weddings West.” Bourne has previously noted on his podcast that has previously photographed weddings.[9]
Bourne's business is now based in Las Vegas, Nevada,[10] where Scott and Jana L. Bourne are listed as active officers.[11]
Bourne is an avid proponent of strong copyright protection and regularly promotes copyright registration (his Twitter bio describes him as, among other things, a "defender of copyrights."). Bourne has represented that he "registers everything that survives the delete cut in the first Lightroom pass" and has noted that he has "drawers and drawers of copyright certificates."[12] Notwithstanding Bourne's assertions, the U.S. Copyright Office public record database reveals only one copyright registration for visual art material under Bourne's name -- a web site, the registration for which was filed in 2005.[13] Several separate registrations cover Bourne's various books.
Bourne has also explained that copyright registration has served him well in infringement contexts, explaining that in the case of a "licensing question . . . fifteen minutes in the United States District Court [he] walks out with a check."[14] A search of public court records reveals, however, that Bourne has never been involved in copyright litigation as a plaintiff.
Scott Bourne has authored three books about photography.
Bourne has published two training videos. 'Secrets to Selling and Publishing Photography' (ISBN 978-1596712713) and 'Podcasting with GarageBand 3' (ISBN 978-1596712461) were released in 2006.
