Schüpfen

Schüpfen is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Municipality president is Ueli Hunziker.

Geography

Schüpfen has an area of 19.8 km2 (7.6 sq mi). Of this area, 57.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 33% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 9.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.3%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Schüpfen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 3,407.[1] As of 2007, 5.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 4.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (94.7%), with French being second most common ( 1.1%) and Spanish being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 37.9% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.4%), the Green Party (13.9%) and the FDP (12.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 62.2% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.4%. In Schüpfen about 82.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Schüpfen has an unemployment rate of 1%. As of 2005, there were 178 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 71 businesses involved in this sector. 196 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 33 businesses in this sector. 643 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 99 businesses in this sector.[3]
